POMONA, Calif. - Behind a 28-point effort from J.J. Judge and another double-double performance by Ashley Boggs, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 72-61 win over Fresno Pacific Wednesday at Kellogg Gym.

Judge has gotten her junior season off to a strong start, following up a nine-point and nine-rebound effort Monday with a career night Wednesday. Along with setting personal bests in points (28) and blocks (3), Judge went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line.

She got plenty of help from her teammates, including a 10-point and 10-rebound showing from Boggs. The Petaluma native also added three assists, two blocks and two steals.

The CPP squad (1-1) showed quite a bit of energy on defense as the hosts forced the Sunbirds to commit 24 turnovers. Sophomore Lauren Goecke helped in that effort, collecting four steals to go along with her five points and four rebounds. She also finished with a stellar assist to turnover ratio of five to one.

The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start Wednesday's game and saw their advantage grow as large as 17 later in the half.

FPU (0-3) trimmed the margin to nine going into halftime and steadily chipped away at the difference through the middle stages of the second period.

A few three-pointers began to fall for the Sunbirds and a field goal from Charde Stevens with 5:43 to play in regulation brought the CPP lead to just one at 60-59.

On its next possession with a chance to take the lead, FPU missed a shot attempt and Cydnie Jones grabbed the long rebound for the Broncos before sending the ball up the floor for Jade Khuri to sink a fastbreak layup.

That play started an 12-2 run for CPP to close out the contest with that spurt featuring four more successful free throws by Judge.

The 11-point victory featured a team effort for the Broncos. Sophomore Mian Dingle shot well from the field, scoring 12 points in 22 minutes of action while going 6-for-12. Fellow second-year Lisha Elsenbach brought intensity off the bench as she totaled eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Up next, the Broncos will start conference play with a 5:30 p.m. road game at Humboldt State on Saturday, Nov. 24.
