POMONA, Calif. - Despite a 16-kill and five-block performance from
Jessica Doerner, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Sonoma State Saturday in its season finale at Kellogg Gym.
Prior to the match, the Broncos honored seniors
Kelly Bonja,
Jamie Kidd,
Taylr Kreutziger and
Diana Lake. The four have combined to play in 380 matches at CPP.
The Broncos' 2012 season comes to an end at 13-16 overall and 9-13 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
CPP played tough early in Saturday's match and took a 1-1 score into the break against the Seawolves, who entered the week ranked at No. 6 in the West Region poll and on the verge of an appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
After taking the second set by the score of 25-17, CPP couldn't sustain the momentum and ended up dropping the third and fourth frames by identical 25-18 scores to wrap up the 3-1 defeat.
Bonja collected 15 more digs Saturday, raising her season total to a program-record 546 and her career amount to 1,362. The career mark ranks second in the Broncos' record books.
The early portion of the first set featured five occasions of a tie score before SSU took a slight edge the rest of the way. Trailing 19-16, CPP rallied for two-straight points with kills from Kreutziger and Doerner. The Seawolves bounced back with a Allyson Sather kill and ended up taking the set 25-21.
The Broncos fell into a small deficit early in the second set but rallied for a 5-0 run behind Kidd's strong serving. In that run, Doerner provided three kills while Kreutziger added one of her own. The same two players also combined for a block to shut down a Kelsey Hull attack. Bonja also delivered for a long serving run as CPP cruised to a 25-17 result in that game.
A series of early attack errors limited the Broncos' chances in the fourth set as the Seawolves jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Caylie Seitz and Sather continued to guide the SSU attack as those two finished with a combined 33 of the team's 57 kills Saturday.
After the fourth finished at 25-18 in favor of the Seawolves, the fifth game started out a bit more closely contested. With SSU holding a slim 9-8 edge, a pair of Bronco attack errors and two service aces from Sammi Bentovoja helped pushed the Seawolves' advantage to 14-8. Despite kills from Lake, Kreutziger and
Alexa Hasen, CPP couldn't close the gap enough and ended up falling 25-18 in the final frame.
