CARSON, Calif. – Despite taking an early lead in Friday's conference match against Sonoma State, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team ended up suffering a 4-2 loss that stopped the Broncos' program-record undefeated streak at 11 games.
Although the result leaves the Broncos' NCAA postseason fate in question, CPP got some help later on Friday as UC San Diego defeated Cal State Stanislaus in the second California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) semifinal matchup.
In the
most recent West Region poll, the Broncos held the No. 4 spot and the CSUS Warriors were just one spot behind at No. 5. The top six teams from the West Region will advance into the Division II postseason and the selection show will air Monday at 4:30 p.m. on
NCAA.com.
"If we get the chance to keep playing, this CCAA Tournament experience certainly will help us," Broncos' head coach Isabelle Harvey said. "We can learn a lot from this game."
The early CPP goal Friday awoke the Seawolves' attack, as SSU broke through for three unanswered scores to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
The Broncos showed their resiliency late in the second half as sophomore
Alison Sauve knocked in a goal at the 79:31 mark to trim the Seawolves' edge to 3-2. Mirroring the first half storyline though, SSU responded with a score about three minutes later and the 4-2 tally held up to the final horn.
The Seawolves, ranked seventh nationally and first in the West Region, will now play UCSD in the CCAA Championship game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Making its first appearance at the conference tournament since 2004, CPP experienced an impressive turnaround this season.
The preseason poll picked the Broncos to finish fifth in the CCAA's South Division and CPP started its conference schedule with four-straight losses. From that point on, the Broncos closed out the regular season with an 8-0-3 run that set a program record for the 11-game undefeated streak.
Junior
Samantha Stiles put the Broncos on the board first Friday, sending in a header at the 10:35 mark with assists from
Angela Garcia and Sauve. Less than four minutes later, the Seawolves found the equalizer as Margi Osmundson flicked a one-touch volley past CPP netminder
Sarah Rohman.
SSU took a 2-1 edge in the 34th minute with a score from Ashley Martin and despite the Broncos holding a 9-6 lead in shots at halftime, the Seawolves held the 2-1 margin in goals at the break. SSU's two second-half scores featured the same two players as Cara Curtin notched the goals and Elena Catania provided the assists.
With many Bronco fans in the crowd at Toro Stadium, Sauve's goal in the 79th minute gave CPP plenty to cheer about as the Seawolves' advantage dropped to just one score. Curtin's final goal eliminated most of the hope for a Broncos' comeback and SSU finished with the 4-2 result.
