BELMONT, Calif. - With four players in double figures and another stellar second-half team effort, 18th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona collected an 85-65 win against Fresno Pacific Saturday.
The result concluded the Broncos' tournament play at the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Classic and also wrapped up this week's three-game road trip. CPP, now 4-0 on the season, will return to Northern California next weekend to resume conference play with matchups at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
Senior guard
Mitchel Anderson recorded his fourth career double-double performance Saturday as he finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He shot 7-for-11 from the field, including a 4-for-7 showing from beyond the arc. With 1,054 career points, Anderson now ranks 10th all-time in Broncos' history.
As a team Saturday, CPP shot 51.5 percent and held the Sunbirds to a 29-percent performance.
Mohamed Fall,
Terrence Drisdom and
Shannon Sharpe joined Anderson in double figures with point totals of 15, 14 and 11 respectively. The scoring amounts for all four players represent season bests.
In a span stretching from late in the first half of the Wednesday win at Humboldt State to early in the second half of the victory over FPU, Fall had knocked down 10-consecutive field goal attempts. He finished Saturday's game with a 6-for-8 showing from the floor.
The first basket of the game came off an Anderson three-pointer but it was FPU that gained the early momentum by building up a 12-5 lead with about four minutes played.
The Broncos chipped away at the margin and at the 10:56 mark, freshman
Jordan Faison dropped in a layup to return the lead back to CPP. That marked the third basket for Faison in a 70-second span and the Sunbirds never regained the edge they had held for nearly eight minutes early in the opening half.
Although FPU only trailed the Broncos 41-35 at halftime, CPP opened the second period on a 20-4 run. Anderson, Fall and Sharpe led the way in that impressive stretch for the Broncos. The margin between the two teams didn't fall below 17 points through the remainder of the contest.
After recording seven steals Friday against Notre Dame de Namur, Drisdom followed that up with a four-steal effort Saturday. The junior from Corona is averaging 4.5 steals per contest so far this season.
For the Sunbirds Saturday, Malcolm Griffin and John Taylor provided roughly two-third of the team's scoring against the Broncos. Griffin collected 23 points and 11 rebounds while Taylor totaled 20 points on 6-for-20 shooting.
CPP now takes a 4-0 record into key California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road matchups next weekend in Chico and Turlock.
