ARCATA, Calif. - With the score tied at 45-45 heading into the final minute of play Saturday, Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State seemed destined for yet another overtime battle.
It would have marked the third-consecutive meeting to feature extra time but instead, the Jacks ended it in regulation Saturday with a 48-45 defeat of CPP. In the final 60 seconds, Humboldt went 3-for-3 at the free throw line and held the Broncos to 0-for-2 from the field.
The result drops CPP to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play while the Jacks improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The Broncos got another impressive performance from senior
Ashley Boggs, who nearly recorded her third-straight double-double outing. She finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior
Rachel Hatch collected 15 points and six assists with both marks representing career bests for the Daly City native.
Both teams had tough shooting nights as the Jacks hit at a 37-percent mark while CPP dropped in 32 percent of its attempts.
Hatch provided the Broncos with the first points of the game on a layup and subsequent free throw during the opening possession. CPP would build up a 20-11 advantage as Boggs capped off that rally with a basket at the 5:47 mark.
Humboldt closed out the half on a 14-2 run though to take a 25-22 advantage into the break. Of Kelly Kime's six points on Saturday, four of them came in the final two minutes of the first half to help the Jacks take the lead.
Although Humboldt pushed the margin to 31-24 early in the second period, the back-and-forth nature of the matchup was far from over. The Broncos held the Jacks scoreless from 18:11 to 12:16 during a 13-0 run for the visitors.
Lauren Goecke and
Mian Dingle provided key baskets in that stretch while Boggs and Hatch continued to deliver as well.
Humboldt eventually tied the score up once again at the 5:34 mark on a Kelly layup. From that point forward, CPP and the Jacks essentially traded baskets down to the wire. As the game entered its final minute with the teams even at 45-45, three-point attempts from
J.J. Judge and Dingle fell off the mark for CPP while Caitie Richards and Lisa Petty knocked down clutch free throws to leave the Jacks victorious.
Petty, despite going 0-for-9 from three-point range, finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the HSU offense and also grabbed nine rebounds.
The Broncos will resume CCAA play next weekend with road matchups at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
