POMONA, Calif. - Shooting 52 percent from the field, the 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team cruised to a 84-50 win over Whittier Thursday in an exhibition contest at Kellogg Gym.
Preseason All-American
Mitchel Anderson led the Bronco charge with 20 points, including a 5-for-6 effort from beyond the arc. Redshirt freshman
Barry Bell added 11 points of his own while collecting three assists, three rebounds and two steals.
The Poets' offense jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but a 20-foot jumper by
DeRonn Scott got the CPP offense rolling and the Broncos never looked back. The Broncos went on to score 43 points while allowing only three points during a 15-minute span in the first half.
The CPP defense flourished in the first half, only allowing 17 points and holding the Poets to a field goal percentage of 26.1.
Senior transfer
Mohamed Fall was a defensive force on the inside and as a team, the Broncos allowed the Poets only 12 points in the paint during the entire contest.
CPP's offense continued to stay hot in the second half, scoring 36 points. The Broncos seemed to be having fun on the court when they capped off the game with a spectacular alley-oop from
Shannon Sharpe to Fall.
The Broncos will play their first official game of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff against The Master's College.
