ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team won the possession battle and generated the majority of the scoring chances Friday but fell 2-1 to Western Washington in heartbreaking fashion as the Vikings struck for a double-overtime game winner.
The Broncos' memorable 2012 season ends at a mark of 10-6-3 overall with a dedicated group of seven seniors departing.
CPP's fourth-year players capped off their careers with a tremendous effort Friday in front of a boisterous crowd of Bronco fans who withstood the rainy and cool Sonoma County weather to cheer on the green and gold.
A chess-match style of play ensued in the first half as the team teams went scoreless through those 45 minutes. Senior midfielder
Sarah Semenero, a Sonoma native, had a great chance at the 19-minute mark but her hard shot was cleared away by a Vikings' defender after the keeper moved off her line to try to punch the ball out of danger.
Just a few minutes later,
Veronica Ramos had a significant scoring opportunity but her shot attempt from about 15 yards out curled just over the crossbar.
The game opened up in the second period as
Samantha Stiles got the Broncos on the board at the 74:02 mark. After a quick pass from Ramos, Stiles lifted a shot that bounced off the hands of Vikings' netminder Jamie Arthurs and rolled slowly across the line to give CPP a 1-0 edge.
WWU netted the equalizer less than two minutes later on a Brianna Jones header, effectively neutralizing the Broncos' momentum. The two squads remained tied at 1-1 through to the end of regulation.
The Broncos continued to get the larger share of scoring chances in overtime but for the first time in extra time, the Vikings had CPP on its heels with a corner kick opportunity as the match entered its 109th minute.
WWU played the ball inbounds quickly in the corner and after the initial cross bounced off a couple players in the box, Stephanie Hamilton sent a header from the near post past Broncos' junior netminder
Sarah Rohman.
With the victory, the fifth-seeded Vikings will now play top-seeded Sonoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
