IRVINE, Calif. - Timely and patient hitting paired with another strong start by senior
Geoff Broussard helped the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team defeat defending NAIA champion Concordia twice Saturday.
The doubleheader completes the Broncos' three-game sweep over the Eagles and now, CPP is off to a 7-0 start for the second-straight season.
Playing on the road for the first time in 2012, the Broncos showed their patience on offense during game one Saturday as they racked up 10 walks and 14 hits to defeat the Eagles 14-8. The second game ended in a 6-4 win for CPP, as Broussard threw seven solid innings and registered seven strikeouts for his second 2012 victory is as many starts.
Allen Rodarte put together two stellar performances on the mound Saturday, tallying the win in game one and the save in the second game.
CPP sophomore outfielder
Joseph Eusebio starred at the plate, totaling six hits through the two contests. Senior first baseman and reigning National Player of the Week
Chris Miller collected five runs batted in Saturday, including the game-winner in the closely-contested second game.
Game One: Broncos 14, Eagles 8
Junior left-hander
Ryan Dunn earned the start for the Broncos Saturday morning and opened with four scoreless innings while striking out five CUI hitters.
The Broncos' attack provided plenty of run support to Dunn, staking a 12-0 lead after just four innings. CPP got to Eagles' starter Aaron Gates, who lasted just 1.1 innings and issue four free passes.
One of the big hits early in the game came from Miller, who knocked a base-clearing double down the leftfield line in the top of the second. Two innings later, senior shortstop
Mike Santora delivered a two-out triple that also brought in three runs.
CUI's offense didn't go unnoticed either though, as the Eagles broke through for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to chase Dunn out of the game.
Senior
Allen Rodarte spelled his teammate in relief though and eventually earned the win after throwing 1.2 innings and holding CUI to one run. Rodarte is now 2-0 this season and 4-0 in his Broncos' career.
The two-out hitting magic continued in the sixth for the Broncos, when senior designated hitter
Jenzen Torres picked up the team's second triple of the game to bring in Eusebio and catcher
Mike Philp.
Junior
Kevin Bosson picked up where Rodarte left off, closing out the game with three scoreless innings to earn his first career save.
Game Two: Broncos 6, Eagles 4
The second game Saturday proved to be a close contest from start to finish. Early on, a pitching duel developed between Broussard of the Broncos and Jake Hovis of the Eagles.
The CUI offense struck first, as the hosts got a double and a single in their first two plate appearances to bring across the game's first run. The Eagles added a second score in the next inning when Spencer Ofelt sent a homerun over the rightfield fence.
Although Hovis managed to retire 10-straight Broncos' batters at one point, CPP broke through for two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Second baseman Nicholas Cooksey got a two-out rally going with a double before fellow Glendora High School graduate
Brennen Salgado lined an RBI single down the rightfield line. After Santora reached on an error, Eusebio delivered a game-tying hit before the Broncos were finally retired.
The tie score didn't last long though, because the Eagles recorded a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead. CPP put together the go-ahead rally in the seventh on Hovis, who allowed 11 hits in total Saturday. Salgado opened the inning with a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Santora. After Torres reached on an error to put runners on the corners,
Jordan Whitman and Miller delivered back-to-back RBI hits with two outs to put the Broncos in front, 6-3.
The three-run edge got turned over to the CPP bullpen and although the Eagles tacked on one score in the eighth, the Broncos held on for the 6-4 win. In relief,
Kyle McNutt and Rodarte combined for two scoreless innings. Rodarte collected the save, his first of the season and fourth of his career.
Up next for CPP will be a Wednesday 5 p.m. road game at Azusa Pacific.
