POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's cross country teams celebrated their 2011 athletic and academic success Saturday with the annual banquet at Kellogg West.

Under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Troy Johnson, the Broncos' cross country squads once again placed among the best in the NCAA Division II West Region during 2011.

On the women's side, Tiffany Dinh qualified for a repeat appearance at the NCAA D-II National Championships. In her return to Spokane, Wash., also the site of the regional race, Dinh placed 36th to earn All-American honors. At Saturday's banquet, she took home team Most Valuable Player honors.

On the men's side, the team MVP recognition went to Ryan Carrell, who placed first at the Triton Invitational and regularly led the Broncos' pack in competition. At the West Region Championships, he finished 18th individually.

Several other awards were handed out Saturday at Kellogg West, including "Most Improved Runner" to Jenny McCarthy and "Outstanding Leadership Award" to Clark Selters.

McCarthy, a junior transfer from Orange Coast College, ran a 22:37.8 mark at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships to place 33rd and set a four-minute personal best. Selters has carried the top grade point average on the men's cross country squad, helping the program earn All-Academic Team distinction.

The "Newcomer of the Year" award recipients were Jazmine Reyes and Brandon Haugen. Reyes finished 22nd at the CCAA Championships at Rohnert Park, Calif., after crossing the line in 22:19.2. Haugen picked up CCAA Freshman of the Year recognition when he finished 27th in that race.
