POMONA, Calif. - A fast-paced pitching duel Friday ended in the undefeated Cal Poly Pomona baseball team picking up a walk-off 3-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay to open the conference schedule.
It marked the third walk-off victory for the Broncos this season. In this edition,
Chris Miller delivered a two-out double to bring in
Jenzen Torres for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Miller now has a team-high 16 runs batted in through 2012.
The result improves CPP's marks to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action, while the Otters fall to 6-4 overall and 0-1 through league play.
The starting pitchers of Friday's contest at Scolinos Field both turned in strong performances, with CSUMB's Donny Medlinger going six innings despite racking up a high pitch count. The senior right-hander finished with five strikeouts while allowing one run.
On the other side, CPP junior right-hander
Erick Ruvalcaba also posted a one-run outing and proved to be a bit more efficient. The Whittier, Calif., native lasted 7.2 innings and scattered five hits while totaling 97 pitches through the afternoon.
"We like to count on Erick to get a series off to a good start," Broncos' head coach
Randy Betten said. "He doesn't get into a lot of big innings and as you saw today, he can set the tone for the weekend by going deep into the ballgame."
In the end though, the closely-contested CCAA opener came down to the performance of the bullpens and clutch hits. Both squads held their own lead at one point but once the Otters tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, it was anyone's game.
Sophomore reliever
Kyle McNutt closed out the game strong for the Broncos, throwing 1.1 innings of no-hit ball and striking out two CSUMB hitters. His final strikeout, coming on a 2-2 pitch to Otters' freshman catcher Jesse White, set the stage for CPP's bottom of the ninth rally.
It didn't come easy though for the Broncos, with two ground outs to start. Torres got CPP a baserunner with a single to center field and
Jordan Whitman followed with a walk to move the potential winning run over to second.
With the game on the line and CSUMB freshman left-hander Chris Neifert making his 53rd pitch of the appearance, Miller sent the first pitch he saw into the right center gap while Torres raced around to cross home plate.
McNutt earned the victory to improve to 2-0 while Neifert suffered the loss to drop to 1-2. Broncos' third baseman
Charles Ball went 3-for-4 at the plate to record his first career multi-hit game. Torres also finished with three hits while adding two RBI.
The Broncos and Otters resume their four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
