POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday in a home doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay, with the Broncos' offense combining for just two runs and six hits between the two contests.

The results came by identical scores of 5-1 and put a blemish on CPP's previously perfect record. The Broncos are now 8-2 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUMB improves to 8-4 overall and 2-1 through league play.

Senior first baseman Chris Miller finished as the lone CPP player with two or more hits Saturday as he went 2-for-6 with a run scored. The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.

The Broncos' bullpen put up decent numbers Saturday against the Otters. The CPP relievers combined for 6.1 innings and two earned runs allowed. Senior right-hander Jake Reed threw 3.2 innings in game one and gave up just one earned score.

Game One: Otters 5, Broncos 1

The first game started out as a tremendous pitching duel between CSUMB's Aaron Appino and the Broncos' Ryan Dunn. The lone score through the first five innings came in the third when the Otters got an RBI groundout from Jason Merjano.

The CSUMB offense got going again in the sixth, getting back-to-back hits with one out to force CPP to replace Dunn. Later in the inning, Jared DeCastro lined a single down the rightfield line to extend the Otters' lead to 3-0.

The Broncos' lineup could never really get going against Appino, who completed eight shutout innings while scattering two hits and striking out three.

CPP managed to get a run in the bottom of the ninth when Donald Walter placed a sacrifice fly into right field that brought in Jenzen Torres. With runners on first and third and two outs, Otters' reliever Dylan Auker struck out Allen Rodarte to close out the 5-1 victory for the visitors.

Game Two: Otters 5, Broncos 1

In game two, the CSUMB offense once again staked an early lead for its starting pitcher. Going against Broncos' right-hander Kevin Bosson, the Otters scored twice in the first inning with one coming from a balk and the other off an RBI double by Brian Haggett.

CPP countered with a run in the bottom of the second after Chris Curtis lifted a fly ball to right field that allowed Miller to cross home plate. With CSUMB holding a slim lead, the visitors turned it over to their bullpen and got a stellar performance from Jordan Helmkamp. He closed the contest with 3.2 innings of scoreless ball while allowing just one hit.

The Otters added a run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Haggett went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two while Danny Nelson and Jeff Phillips added two hits apiece.

Bosson finished with 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Freshman right-hander J.J. Franklin put together a decent relief performance, totaling 2.2 innings while giving up an earned run and three hits. Franklin collected two strikeouts in the outing.
