POMONA, Calif. - In a showdown of two first-place teams, Cal Poly Pomona earned a resounding 64-47 defeat of Humboldt State Saturday at Kellogg Gym.

In front of 1,072 fans, the Broncos held the visiting Lumberjacks to their lowest point total this season. With the win, CPP can now mark down Tuesday, Feb. 28, as a first-round home game in the conference tournament.

Entering the night, three teams were tied for first place in the conference standings. Now there are two: the Broncos and Chico State. With two regular season contests remaining, the two squads hold identical 14-6 marks in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The 17-point difference between CPP and HSU is the largest margin of victory for the Broncos over the Jacks in program history. Saturday's game was the 23rd meeting between the two teams.

Mitchel Anderson led the way on the offensive side of things for CPP as he collected 21 points and 11 rebounds, marking his third-career double-double effort. Anderson sunk eight of his 12 shot attempts, including a 3-for-6 showing from beyond the arc. The Broncos shot 48 percent from the floor while holding the Jacks to a 33.3-percent performance.

Senior forward Tyquan Brown grabbed 10 rebounds, helping CPP finish with a 38-30 rebounding edge over visiting HSU. The Jacks' Randy Hunter, the sixth-best scorer in the CCAA, was held to six points on a 1-for-5 shooting night.

Once Anderson broke an 8-8 tie with a three-pointer at the 12:58 mark, the Broncos had the lead and never looked back. The margin reached as high as 10 in the first half before settling at 31-24 in favor of CPP going in the break.

The Broncos turned up their defensive pressure even more in the second half, holding the Jacks to just six points through the first 11:32 of the period. Meanwhile, CPP became even more efficient on the offensive end by shooting 52.4 percent during the final 20 minutes.

With about five minutes to play and the Broncos holding a 12-point lead, Brown cleaned up after a missed shot from DeRonn Scott, grabbing the ball just as it rolled off the rim and throwing it down for a dunk that put Kellogg Gym in a frenzy.

The crowd got even louder on the next play when Daniel Rodriguez stole the ball away from the Jacks and assisted Anderson on the other end for a fastbreak layup. Rodriguez finished with a season-high five assists and no turnovers.

The CPP advantage stayed in double digits for the final 17:16 of regualtion. Now the Broncos will turn their attention to a Wednesday 7:30 p.m. home matchup with Cal State L.A.
