POMONA, Calif. –  With the defense of the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team toughening up down the stretch Saturday against Humboldt State, the Broncos overpowered and outscored the Jacks 20-4 in overtime to secure a 75-59 win.

The result moves the two teams into a tie for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with matching marks of 13-7. Joining them in the tie is Cal State L.A. CPP will host the Golden Eagles of CSULA on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Senior center Megan Ford led the Broncos' offense with 19 points and 16 rebounds, marking double-double No. 21 of her career and No. 12 for this season. Three other CPP players scored in double figures: Charlene Popoff (16), Sarah Semenero (15) and J.J. Judge (11).

The CPP defense proved to be the story of the night though, holding HSU's attack - the third-ranked offense in the CCAA - to just three field goals through the final 16 minutes of action Saturday.

The Jacks started out strong, rolling out to a 15-4 lead less than eight minutes into the contest. The Broncos, behind Ford's near double-double through the first period, closed out the half on a 13-2 run to take a 33-28 lead into the break.

The teams traded big swings to start the second half before the Jacks took a 53-51 edge into the final five minutes of regulation. Judge cut into the lane and made a running jumper to even the score with 3:33 to play. On the next Broncos' possession, Semenero drew a foul and sunk two free throws to give CPP its first advantage in more than 10 minutes.

The Broncos' defense continued to stifle the Jacks' attack but a layup from Lisa Petty broke a 10-minute field goal drought for the visitors at the 1:04 mark and pulled HSU even at 55-55 heading into the final minute.

The Jacks had a final chance in regulation to pull in front but a three-point attempt from Kayla Williams fell left of the rim and the game moved into overtime.

Ford opened the scoring in the extra period with two free throws and Popoff followed with a layup one minute later to extend the CPP edge to 59-55. HSU countered on the next trip down the floor when Petty dropped in a layup on the right side to cut the margin back to two.

Broncos' senior guard Rosslyn Beard answered with a three-pointer on the right side atop the arc to give CPP a five-point advantage with 2:41 to play. While the Jacks continued their cold shooting, Popoff added back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 66-57.

The Broncos' offense continued to roll and ended up outscoring the visitors 20-4 in the extra period to wrap up the 16-point win. Now, CPP turns its attention to Wednesday's pivotal home matchup against the Golden Eagles of CSULA.
