POMONA, Calif. - Behind a stellar complete-game performance from senior right-hander
Geoff Broussard, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team closed out the four-game series against Cal State Monterey Bay with a 6-2 victory Sunday.
Making his 28th start as a Bronco, Broussard threw all nine innings for the first time in his career. He scattered five hits while allowing just two runs to pick up his third victory in as many starts.
The CPP offense racked up 11 hits, with the biggest being a two-run homer from
Jenzen Torres in the bottom of the third to extend the Broncos' lead to 3-0. It marked the first home run of the season for the senior catcher.
With the win, the Broncos now stand at 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Otters of CSUMB leave town with marks of 8-5 overall and 2-2 through league play.
After being held to just two runs in the two losses Saturday, the CPP attack got going early on Sunday with a run in the bottom of the first. It came with one out when junior
Jordan Whitman floated a single into center to score
Humberto Tovalin, who had doubled to start the rally.
Tovalin scored again in the third when Torres launched his home run over the beyond the fence in left center. The Broncos were helped by a lack of control from Otters' right-handed starter Jeff Owen, who finished with five innings but issued four walks, hit two batters and threw three wild pitches.
Broussard didn't allow a hit until the top of the fifth, when David Garcia opened up the CSUMB turn with an infield single. Garcia later scored when teammate Jeff Phillips grounded out.
The Otters went to their bullpen in the sixth by bringing in reliever Zac Grotz. The CPP offense continued to succeed though as Torres knocked a two-out single down the line to bring in
Chris Curtis and give the Broncos a 4-1 advantage.
Curtis finished with his first multi-hit game as a Bronco Sunday when he delivered an RBI double in the seventh to hand CPP a 6-2 advantage, which is where the final score settled at. Also collecting multi-hit performances were Torres (3-for-4) and Whitman (2-for-5).
The Broncos will continue their homestand on Thursday when UC San Diego visits Scolinos Field for a matchup beginning at 2 p.m.
