POMONA, Calif. - Trailing by 10 points to Cal State L.A. Thursday as the scoreboard ticked under two minutes, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team rallied to make it a one-point game after
Mitchel Anderson drained a three-pointer with 41 seconds to play.
The visiting Golden Eagles hit their final five free throws though, doing just enough to maintain the edge and wrap up a 64-61 upset victory.
The result drops the Broncos (14-7) into a two-way tie for second place with Humboldt State. Alone in first place is Chico State (14-6), a team that'll host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday and conclude the regular season Friday against Cal State East Bay.
Meanwhile, CPP now needs the Wildcats of CSUC to suffer at least one loss in those two contests to have a chance at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season title. The Broncos host Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-10) Friday in the regular season finale on "Senior Night." Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
On Wednesday at Kellogg Gym, Anderson led the CPP offense with 23 points on 7-for-17 shooting. He sank four of his 10 three-point attempts while adding eight rebounds. Freshman
Daniel Rodriguez made several key plays down the stretch, with all seven of his points coming between the 1:57 and 1:02 marks in the second half to cut the CSULA lead from 10 to three.
After the Golden Eagles' Quinton Watkins connected on one of his two free throw attempts on the next visitors' possession, Anderson dropped in a three-pointer on the other end that brought CPP within one - 59-58 - with 41 seconds to play.
After a foul from
Matt Rosser sent CSULA's Bussey Ellis to the free throw line, the Golden Eagles once again only could manage to knock down one of two attempts. That set up the Broncos with a chance to tie or take the lead but a missed layup from
Dwayne Fells fell into the hands of Leland Jones and CSULA went on to sink all four of its final free throw attempts.
Jones paced the Golden Eagles with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. On the defensive effort for the Broncos,
Tyquan Brown delivered four blocks. CSULA managed to shoot 42 percent from the floor while CPP posted a 38.2-percent mark.
Up next for CPP will be that 7:30 p.m. Friday matchup against the Toros of CSUDH as part of "Senior Night" at Kellogg Gym.
