POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona played UC San Diego eight times in 2011 as the two squads developed a season-long rivalry that ended in the Broncos knocking the Tritons out of the NCAA postseason.

The first contest of the intriguing 2012 season series went in CPP's favor as well, with the Broncos securing a 10-5 home win Thursday over UCSD at Scolinos Field.

The CPP offense proved to be efficient, collecting 13 hits while only leaving four runners on base. The Tritons meanwhile stranded eight on base while totaling 11 hits.

Jordan Whitman and Mike Santora led the Broncos' attack with three hits apiece and a combined  six runs batted in. Junior right-hander Erick Ruvalcaba got the start on the mound for the Broncos and turned in a workmanlike effort of eight innings while allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. He racked up eight strikeouts, one shy of matching his career high.

UCSD got to Ruvalcaba for a run in the top of the first when Nick La Face lifted a homer over the leftfield fence. The host CPP squad countered right back though in the bottom half of that inning, as Santora, Whitman and Jenzen Torres initiated the rally with three-straight singles.

Torres and Donald Walter delivered the two RBI for that frame, pushing the score to 2-1 and giving the Broncos a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the afternoon. CPP added another score in the second, thanks in part to a lack of control from Tritons' starter Jeff Rauh. Through his six innings of work, Rauh totaled six wild pitchers and also hit a batter.

The biggest inning for the Broncos' lineup came in the form of a four-run fourth, which featured singles from Joseph Eusebio, Chris Curtis and Santora early before Whitman knocked a three-run homer over the fence in left center to stretch the CPP edge to 7-2.

The two teams played even between innings six through nine, as each squad picked up three more runs the rest of the way to settle at the convincing 10-5 difference in favor of the Broncos.

Aside from Santora and Whitman, three other CPP players recorded multi-hit games as Eusebio, Curtis and Torres collected two hits apiece. Ruvalcaba earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

CPP and UCSD will continue their series Friday with a 2 p.m. game at Scolinos Field.
