LA JOLLA, Calif. - Needing just six outs to complete a doubleheade sweep Saturday, defensive miscues forced the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to settle for a split at UC San Diego.

Patient hitting and another strong outing from Geoff Broussard helped the Broncos take a 9-3 win in the first contest. Holding a late 3-2 lead in game two, the CPP defense committed two errors in the sixth to allow UCSD to secure the comeback 4-3 victory.

The results concluded a four-game series between the two squads, with the Broncos and Tritons collecting two wins apiece. Up next for CPP is a set of four road contests at Chico State.

Game One: Broncos 9, Tritons 3

The UCSD offense got to Broussard early, scoring three runs across the first two innings. The senior right-hander from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., settled in nicely though. He nearly threw another complete game but finished with 8.2 innings while allowing the three scores and racking up eight strikeouts.

The Broncos pulled to within one when junior Jordan Whitman knocked his second homerun of the season in the top of the third to also score Mike Santora.

CPP put together another big inning in the fifth, scoring five runs in that frame. The key hit came from Mike Philp, who lined a two-run double down the leftfield line with two outs.

After the Tritons put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, Broncos' reliever Allen Rodarte entered the game to close out the 9-3 win. Broussard improved his record to 4-0 through the early part of the 2012 season.

Through the first half of the doubleheader, Torres went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in while Santora reached base in four of his six plate appearances.

Game Two: Tritons 4, Broncos 3

In the second game Saturday, an error on the Tritons allowed CPP to pick up a run in the first. The Broncos stretched their lead to 2-0 in the next frame after Joseph Eusebio led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Charles Ball.

UCSD catcher Brian Choi, batting out of the ninth spot in the lineup, tied up the game with a two-run homer in the fifth. That set the stage for a dramatic final two innings at Triton Ballpark Saturday.

In a clear example of manufacturing a run, the Broncos picked up a score in the sixth. Donald Walter started that rally with a walk and eventually moved to second on a balk. He then shifted to third after Philp dropped down a sacrifice bunt and then scored off a sac fly by Humberto Tovalin.

The Tritons' offense countered with two scores in the bottom half of the inning, including the game-tying run off a Garrett Tuck single and the go-ahead one off a CPP error. That put UCSD ahead 4-3 and Tony York continued a strong relief outing to close out the one-run win for the hosts.

Broncos' right-hander Kevin Bosson suffered the tough-luck loss, throwing six innings and giving up just two earned runs. The Claremont, Calif., native collected seven strikeouts. Eusebio reached base in all three of his plate appearances while picking up two walks.
