POMONA, Calif. - Bearing witness to an inside-the-park homerun is usually enough to call it a unique day of baseball.

Saturday at Scolinos Field proved to be extra special. In Cal Poly Pomona sweeping a doubleheader from Saint Martin's, Bronco fans saw an inside-the-park homerun and a triple play from the home team.

In the middle of the two baseball rarities were a pair of freshman players from Glendora High School - Brennen Salgado and Nicholas Cooksey.

Game One: Broncos 19, Saints 3
In the third inning of the first game Saturday with two Saints on base, Mario Sanelli sent a line drive that seemed destined for the outfield. Cooksey, the second baseman, dove to his left to snare the ball. He then threw to shortstop Mike Santora, who stepped on second to double up Zach Leonard and then threw to first for Chris Miller to step on the bag before Bobby Twedt could retreat.

The Broncos ended up winning that first contest by a score of 19-3. Leading the way on the mound was starting left-hander Ryan Dunn, who finished with five scoreless inning as he scattered four hits and struck out three.

The CPP attack scored six runs in the opening inning Saturday, with the Broncos needing just one hit in that span because of SMU starter Sean Goforth's lack of control. The Saints' pitchers have hit 17 batters already this series and in game one Saturday, Goforth only lasted 0.1 innings and 20 pitchers before being replaced.

The CPP lineup broke through for six more runs in the fifth, which started with catcher Mike Philp knocking a double to centerfield. Philp finished the game with a 3-for-4 effort and four runs batted in.

The Broncos pushed the gap even wider in the eighth, with Miller and Philp each delivering two-run doubles. Miller continued his strong start to the season by reaching base in four of his five plate appearances during game one Saturday.

Game Two: Broncos 12, Saints 2
Moving into game two of Saturday's doubleheader, the pitching matchup featured CPP's Kevin Bosson - the team's leader in wins during 2011 - against the Saints' left-hander Josh Moss.

Bosson pitched three perfect innings while striking out three batters. On the other side, the Broncos got to Moss for eight runs during the first two frames.

Santora got the first-inning rally going with a walk and sophomore outfielder Joseph Eusebio moved him over with a single. Up next, senior catcher and Division II Preseason All-American selection Jenzen Torres drove in both runners on a double to right center. Junior outfielder Jordan Whitman followed that up with a double of his own to score Torres.

Torres continued to shine in the second inning, knocking in two more runs with a single through the left side. A sacrifice fly from Donald Walter pushed the Broncos' lead to 8-0 after two innings of play.

Salgado, getting the game two start at catcher, had one of the top highlights of the series in the fourth inning. Not long after Miller tripled down the rightfield line, Salgado stepped to the plate and sent a line drive deep into centerfield. The Saints' Leonard dove for it but came up empty-handed, allowing Salgado to race around the bases for the inside-the-park homer.

CPP junior right-hander Erick Ruvalcaba came on in relief, throwing four strong innings to earn the victory. The Broncos and Saints will conclude their four-game series Sunday with a single nine-inning game starting at 11 a.m.
