TURLOCK, Calif. - A late second-half rally brought Cal State Stanislaus to within just one point, 57-56, of Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. The Warriors' hopes of a comeback quickly slipped away though as the Broncos' defense held the hosts scoreless over the final 2:50 to secure a 65-56 win.
The result keeps CPP in a tie for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With Cal State Dominguez Hills falling at UC San Diego Saturday, it's now a four-team lockup at the top of the standings. The Broncos join Humboldt State, Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino at 11-5 in conference play.
CPP senior forward
Dwayne Fells led a balanced Broncos' attack Saturday with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Teammate
DeRonn Scott helped out in the passing game as he totaled a career-high five assists.
"We were tired and Stanislaus battled," Broncos' head coach
Greg Kamansky said. "Our players dug in those last six minutes. Dwayne put up the numbers offensively and on the other end, he came up with two of the most important plays of the game in drawing two charges."
CPP got off to a strong start Saturday in Turlock. The visitors committed just three turnovers through the first 20 minutes and held the Warriors to a 33.3-percent shooting effort in the first half.
Fells, coming off the bench for the first time since the conference opener in November, led the Broncos to a comfortable 34-14 edge at the break.
The host CSUS squad stole away the momentum in chunks through the middle of the second period though, putting together a 12-2 run between the 14:47 and 10:49 marks to cut the Broncos' lead from 17 to seven.
Although CPP pushed the margin back to double digits moments later when Fells tallied a three-point play off a layup and free throw, the Warriors continued to chip away. Behind the strong play of Reggie Jones and Ronnie Sawyer, CSUS pulled to within one point - 57-56 - with just short of three minutes remaining.
The Broncos' defense dug in at that point though, contributing to a pair of Warriors' offensive fouls and bringing about a
Matt Rosser that translated into a
Tyquan Brown dunk to give CPP a five-point edge going into the final 60 seconds of action.
As the Warriors began to foul, the Broncos' Scott and
Mitchel Anderson each hit a pair of free throws to cap off the 8-0 run to close out the nine-point win. Scott and Anderson joined Fells in double figures Saturday with point totals of 13 and 12 respectively.
CPP will take its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, with the first matchup being Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
