TURLOCK, Calif. – Every Bronco player scored and grabbed at least one rebound Saturday, as the impressive team effort led Cal Poly Pomona to a 92-51 road rout at Cal State Stanislaus.
The 41-point spread is the largest margin of victory in a conference game for the Broncos in more than eight years. CPP secured a 42-point win during the 2003-04 season. The opponent? The same CSUS Warriors' program.
With Cal State L.A. falling to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday, the Broncos are now tied for third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with marks of 15-5 overall and 11-5 in league play. Second-place Cal State Monterey Bay also lost Saturday to fall to 11-4 through CCAA action.
Despite entering the week with just two wins in their last five games, the Broncos have rallied for a 2-0 showing on the road Friday at Chico and Saturday in Turlock.
Four Broncos finished in double figures Saturday, highlighted by sophomore guard
Ariel Marsh's 22 points in 23 minutes of play.
Megan Ford scored 16 points on an efficient 7-for-11 effort from the field. Senior guard
Sarah Semenero contributed 13 points while junior forward
Rachel Porter registered a career-high 10 points.
Senior guard
Rosslyn Beard did a wonderful job distributing the ball Saturday as she racked up a career-high seven assists. The Broncos' bench totaled 29 of the team's 46 rebounds and the leader with seven boards on the night was freshman guard
Lauren Goecke.
To start Saturday's contest, CPP opened on an unbelievable 23-0 run. Semenero found her shooting rhythm early, collecting eight-straight points in that long stretch. Marsh capped it all off with four points of her own. The Broncos' defense held the Warriors scoreless for the first 11 minutes and 18 seconds of the game.
The margin didn't fall below 20 the rest of the half and the intermission score settled at 44-17 in favor of CPP after
Lisha Elsenbach and
Charlene Popoff sunk jumpers in the final minute of the period.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first. The Broncos charged out to a 15-2 run this time with Ford leading the way. The senior center totaled eight of the 15 points, helping CPP extend its lead to 59-19 with about five minutes played in the final period.
A Marsh three-pointer at the 9:26 mark made it a 47-point lead for the Broncos, which ended up being the largest margin of the contest. The CPP defense forced the host Warriors' squad to commit 34 turnovers, twice the amount that the Broncos' offense picked up.
CPP will head back on the road next weekend as the Broncos return to action Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
