POMONA, Calif. - After dropping three-consecutive lopsided contests to start the season, the Saint Martin's squad saved its best for last Sunday.

Unfortunately for the visitors, it still wasn't enough to top Cal Poly Pomona.

The Broncos battled back from a 5-0 deficit to earn a 6-5 walk-off victory. With the bases loaded and two outs in CPP's final turn at the plate, Mike Santora got hit by a pitch to score the tying run.

The even score of 5-5 alleviated a bit of the pressure and sophomore outfielder Joseph Eusebio capitalized on the opporunity, ripping the game-winning single over the Saints' infield. It capped off an impressive opening week for Eusebio, who went 8-for-16 at the plate through the series. He totaled six runs batted in, none bigger than No. 6.

Aside from Eusebio's clutch hit, another key part of CPP's success Sunday was the collective performance of the bullpen. Senior left-hander Shane Philipps threw three solid innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Sophomore righty Kyle McNutt followed with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball while adding two strikeouts of his own. Senior right-hander and two-way player Allen Rodarte pitched a perfect ninth and ended up getting the win when the Broncos' offense picked up two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

To start Sunday's game, the visiting Saints seized their first lead of the series by scoring three runs on CPP freshman right-handed starter J.J. Franklin. SMU first baseman Spencer Dodd delivered a two-run single in that inning as the Saints were helped by the lack of control by Franklin, who ended up with 3.1 innings of work and three earned runs allowed.

Meanwhile, SMU senior left-hander Thomas DeBoer held the potent Broncos' lineup scoreless through the first five innings. At one point, he retired nine-straight CPP hitters.

The Broncos finally got to DeBoer in the bottom of the sixth though. Santora opened the rally with a single to center and Eusebio followed with a double down the leftfield line. Junior outfielder Jordan Whitman got CPP on the scoreboard for the first time, sending a two-base out into the outfield to score both Santora and Eusebio.

Two more runs came later in the inning on a Chris Miller single and a groundout from Donald Walter. Despite going hitless at the plate Sunday, Walter contributed two outstanding defensive plays in the outfield to help out the Broncos' pitchers earlier in the contest.

With DeBoer removed after six innings and 92 pitches of work, the Broncos continued to threaten offensively. Faced with a one-run hole going into the ninth, CPP got a leadoff runner when Miller reached on an error. Walter was then hit by a pitch and a walk from Humberto Tovalin loaded the bases. Faced with a two-out situation, Santora worked a 3-1 count before also getting hit by a pitch. It marked the 19th time that a Broncos' batter had been hit by a pitch.

Then, Eusebio lined a 3-2 pitch into the outfield to start the Scolinos Field celebration, wrapping up the four-game sweep. Up next for the Broncos will be a Friday 2 p.m. game at Scolinos Field against Concordia.
