POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team captured its first series win of 2012 conference play Saturday, defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills twice behind an eight-inning gem from Geoff Broussard in game one and a two-run walk-off homer by Chris Miller in extra innings of game two.

The Broncos improve to 16-7 overall and 9-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the visiting Toros fall to 5-15 overall and 3-13 through league action. CPP will get a 12-day break from competition before traveling to challenge CCAA leader Sonoma State in a four-game series starting March 23.

Miller totaled five hits between the two contests Saturday while second baseman Charles Ball went 3-for-4 in the earlier game. Broussard, who allowed one earned run in his eight innings and totaled a career-high nine strikeouts, improves to 6-0 on the season to hold sole possession of the NCAA lead for 2012 wins among Division II pitchers.

CPP's starter for the second half of the doubleheader, Erick Ruvalcaba, also threw well. The junior right-hander from Whittier, Calif., bumped his record to 4-0 after throwing a complete game of eight innings while giving up just three runs to the Toros.

Game One: Broncos 11, Toros 4

The Broncos got on the scoreboard first in game one as leadoff hitter and senior shortstop Mike Santora opened the contest with a single. After advancing around to third on a pair of wild pitches from CSUDH starter Devon Ramirez, Santora crossed home on a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Jenzen Torres.

The first of CPP's four homeruns on the day came in the bottom of the second, when senior third baseman Chris Curtis lifted a ball over the leftfield fence to push the host's lead to 3-1. It marked Curtis' second homer in as many days.

The Broncos were able to get the first four batters on base in the fourth, as Ball and Jordan Whitman delivered key singles while Curtis added a sacrifice fly to help CPP take a 7-1 lead into the later innings.

The visiting CSUDH squad couldn't muster much offense at all against Broussard, who picked up five of his nine strikeouts in his final two innings of work. Thanks to a defensive miscue from the Toros and another RBI hit by Whitman, the Broncos tacked on three more scores in the eighth before the final score eventually settled at 11-4 in favor of CPP.

Game Two: Broncos 5, Toros 3 (8 innings)

Game two started out as a classic pitching duel between the Broncos' Ruvalcaba and the Toros' Danny Torres. CPP managed to break the scoreless tie in the fourth with back-to-back one-out homers from Miller and Joseph Eusebio. The second shot marked the first homerun for Eusebio as a Bronco.

Ruvalcaba continued to motor through the CSUDH lineup and didn't allow a baserunner until Sako Chapjian placed a single into left to start the top of the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly from Eusebio in the sixth gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead going into the potential final frame in the top of the seventh.

The Toros' offense came alive though, collecting four hits with a two-out double from pinch hitter Hector Gomez tying the score at 3-3. In the bottom half of the inning, CPP ended up stranding a runner at third to move the game into extras.

Miller proved to be the hero in the bottom of the eighth. With Torres trying multiple pickoff attempts with Donald Walter as the runner on first, the CSUDH pitcher went to the plate eventually with an 0-1 pitch. Miller sent it over the centerfield fence and the rest of the Broncos sprinted to home plate to celebrate the walk-off finish and the series victory.
