FULLERTON, Calif. – Although the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team sent out a limited number of athletes to Saturday's Ben Brown Invite on the campus of Cal State Fullerton, the Broncos certainly made up for the lack of quantity with a high level of quality performances.
From steady improvement by top returners to continued flashes of potential from new contributors, the CPP squad represented well and raced fast against a variety of Division I competitors.
Broncos' senior All-American
Jacob Deavers improved his 400-meter dash time Saturday as he crossed the line in 48.93, just a bit slower than the 48.00 "B" provisional benchmark.
In the sprints, Broncos' junior
Tanner Terry demonstrated his high-speed potential in the 200-meter dash. His Saturday time of 21.77 ranked fourth overall across all of the heats, which included a total of 100 athletes.Terry finished just 0.56 behind the first-place mark set by USC's Bryshon Nellum.
Brandon Haugen, the 2011 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Freshman of the Year, showed improvement in the 1,500-meter event Saturday as he posted a time of 4:08.94. That proved to be almost seven seconds faster than his previous best, which was set in the season opener at UC San Diego on Feb. 18.
The 4x400 relay of
Orlando Smith,
Matt Boudreau,
Keith Comrie and
Sam Morales recorded a mark of 3:16.28, which stands as the Broncos' top result in that event so far for 2012.
The CPP track and field squads will return to action on Wednesday for day one of the California Relays hosted at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif.
