ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - After falling 5-4 in game one Thursday at Sonoma State, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team rallied for a 5-1 win in the second half of the doubleheader behind stellar performances from seniors
Geoff Broussard,
Jenzen Torres and
Chris Curtis.
Broussard threw a complete game of nine innings, holding the Seawolves to five hits and no earned runs while setting a career high in strikeouts with 12.
Torres, making his 175th career start, went 2-for-4 at the plate in the second contest. Curtis also starred offensively, going 5-for-8 on Thursday.
The results settle CPP's marks at 17-8 overall and 10-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and SSU stands at 13-9 overall and 11-3 through league play.
The two squads will conclude their four-game series on Friday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
Game One: Seawolves 5, Broncos 4
The Seawolves staked an early 1-0 lead when junior designated hitter Devon Zenn sent a sacrifice fly into left field to score teammate Evan Warner in the first inning. SSU threatened for more in the second but a diving catch from Broncos' leftfielder
Donald Walter stopped the host's rally short.
CPP managed to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the third as senior shortstop
Mike Santora lined a single to right field that brought in
Charles Ball from second. Ball had initiated the rally with a one-out single before stealing a base to move into scoring position.
The host SSU squad took the lead back with a fourth-inning solo shot but the Broncos evened the score at 2-2 with a Ball sac fly brought in
Joseph Eusebio in the top of the fifth.
The score remained in a tie until the top of the seventh when CPP put together an extended rally against Seawolves' starter Thomas Lee. After Broncos' senior first baseman
Chris Miller reached on an error to lead off the frame, Eusebio followed with a single.
CPP got the go-ahead score when Curtis tapped an two-out single along the third base line. With runners at first and third, Curtis attempted a steal but held up in the basepath just enough for Eusebio to race home and give the Broncos a 4-2 edge.
After the Seawolves rallied for a run in the eighth, CPP took a 4-3 lead into the ninth. Senior reliever
Allen Rodarte replaced starter
Erick Ruvalcaba, who finished with eight innings and 115 pitches thrown. The junior right-hander from Whittier, Calif., worked out of tough jams and held SSU to three runs while striking out six batters.
Seawolves' pinch hitter Danny Dworkin reached first as the leadoff hitter when a throw from Santora bounced in the dirt in front of Miller. Then, SSU second baseman Jackson Stogner lined a double to bring Dworkin in for the tying run. The winning hit came from Garrett Gooselaw, lifting the hosts to a 5-4 comeback win.
Game Two: Broncos 5, Seawolves 1
The Broncos got going quickly in game two as CPP scored twice in the first inning to give Broussard early run support. Junior centerfielder
Jordan Whitman started the rally with a one-out single and the two runs batted in followed with a groundout from Walter and a single by Miller.
The visitors added another score in the second after Curtis started a two-out rally with a single. After stealing second, Curtis then crossed home after SSU centerfield Evan Warner dropped a fly ball off the bat of Ball.
Torres pushed the Broncos edge to 4-0 with a solo shot over the leftfield fence in the fourth, as that marked career homer No. 30 for the Valencia, Calif., native. Meanwhile, Broussard quieted the Seawolves' offense while retiring the first eight hitters he faced.
SSU managed to get on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth after an infield single from Danny Dworkin brought in Warner, cutting the CPP lead to 4-1. The Broncos rallied for an insurance score in the eighth though as Curtis lined a double to allow
Michael Johnson to cross home.
With another superb outing, Broussard improves to 7-0 and ties St. Mary's junior right-hander Carl O'Neal for the most wins among Division II pitchers.
