ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona suffered a pair of losses Friday at Sonoma State, concluding the Broncos' first series loss of the 2012 season.
The CPP offense sputtered at times, managing just four runs across the Friday doubleheader.
The Broncos' pitching staff received a strong start from junior right-hander
Kevin Bosson, who went 6.1 innings in the first game while allowing three runs. Junior
Ryan Dunn also contributed 5.2 stellar innings in relief through his two appearances out of the bullpen Friday.
The results drop CPP to 17-10 overall and 10-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the first-place Seawolves improve to 15-9 overall and 13-3 through league play.
The Broncos will return to action on Thursday with a 3 p.m. home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
Game One: Seawolves 4, Broncos 2
The first game Friday featured a pitching duel between
Kevin Bosson of CPP and Joshua Nervis of SSU.
The Broncos' offense struck for two scores in the top of the first, with senior shortstop
Mike Santora getting the rally going with a leadoff walk. After the next hitter,
Charles Ball, reached on an error,
Jenzen Torres and
Chris Miller followed shortly thereafter with RBI singles.
Bosson worked out of a first-inning jam and settled in nicely, holding the Seawolves hitless through the first 4.2 innings. The first SSU hit was a big one though as sophomore second baseman Jackson Stogner doubled to center to allow Justin Serrao to score and cut the Broncos' lead to 2-1. SSU leftfielder Steven Filippi delivered the equalizer with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
The Seawolves' attack put together the go-ahead rally in the seventh, which started with Jeff Boulware reaching base and then moving over to third on a single by Justin Serrao. The next hitter, Stogner, grounded into a fielder's choice to score Boulware and put SSU up 3-2. CPP reliever
Ryan Dunn replaced Bosson and struck out two hitters to work out of the jam.
Although Nervis only lasted six innings while totaling 105 pitches and racking up 12 strikeouts, the Seawolves received a stellar relief performance from senior righty Paul Anaya. The Madera, Calif., native threw three scoreless innings to conclude the game and pickup the win in the 4-2 result. Leading the Broncos' offense was Torres, who finished 2-for-4 in Friday's first contest.
Game Two: Seawolves 9, Broncos 2
Broncos' senior right-hander
Jake Reed received the game two start, the first of 2012 and sixth of his career. The SSU offense got rolling early, tallying five runs in the bottom of the first on six hits. The Seawolves added two more in the second inning before Dunn entered the game in relief and slowed down the SSU attack.
CPP got on the board with two scores in the top of the fourth after senior first baseman
Chris Miller and sophomore rightfielder
Joseph Eusebio opened the frame with back-to-back hits. An error on the Seawolves' shortstop helped the Broncos trim the lead to 7-2.
SSU starting right-hander Harmen Sidhu quieted the CPP bats through most of his five innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven. Reliever Michael Garber provided two scoreless innings for the Seawolves to wrap up the 9-2 victory.
