POMONA, Calif. - Despite staking a 4-0 lead early in Friday's game, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team lost the advantage and the Broncos' offense fell silent in the later innings as the visiting Cal State San Bernardino squad went on to secure a 5-4 comeback win.

CSUSB left-handed starter Mike Mudron encountered plenty of trouble in the second with the Broncos scoring four times but beyond, the visiting hurler settled down and finished with six strikeouts in five innings.

The Coyotes' bullpen combined for four scoreless frames, including Kerry Kelley's perfect ninth to notch the save. Through the final six innings, the CPP attack tallied only two hits.

Broncos' right-hander Kevin Bosson proved to be the tough-luck loser Friday as he totaled seven innings while giving up five runs, three of which were unearned. The Claremont, Calif., native totaled seven strikeouts and allowed eight hits.

Leading the CPP offense Friday was Joseph Eusebio, who delivered a two-run single as part of the four-run second inning. Coyotes' shortstop Mike Newell starred defensively for the visitors, taking away a hit from the Broncos with a diving catch and throwing out a runner trying to reach home on a ground ball in the sixth.

The CPP lineup certainly clicked in the second with Chris Miller drawing a leadoff walk before Humberto Tovalin and Charles Ball followed with back-to-back one-out singles. Eusebio's line drive to right field brought in two and overall in the inning, the Broncos scored four runs on three hits.

Two-straight singles from CSUSB in the fourth allowed the visitors to trim the lead to 4-2. The Coyotes rallied again in the sixth, using a pair of CPP errors to extend their turn at the plate. In the heart of that inning, designated hitter Jake Pilkerton delivered a two-out double to the gap that brought in two runs.

Those three unearned scores gave CSUSB a 5-4 edge and the Coyotes' relievers helped make that result final.

The two squads will conclude their four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader in San Bernardino starting at 11 a.m. The pair of contests will take place at Fiscalini Field.
