CARSON, Calif. - A wild series opener between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday ended in a 10-9 victory for the Broncos, who jumped out to a 10-0 lead before holding off a late Toros' charge.
The win pushes CPP's marks fo 14-6 overall and 7-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while dropping the host CSUDH squad to 4-13 overall and 2-11 through league action. It also extended the Toros' losing streak to six games.
The Broncos finished with 19 hits Thursday, with freshman designated hitter
Brennen Salgado putting together the top plate performance in a 4-for-5 showing while scoring two runs. Each spot in the CPP lineup generated at least one hit in Thursday's thrilling win.
Through the first four and a half innings, the Broncos appeared to be on their way to a convincing blowout victory. CPP took a 3-0 lead into the fifth and then added a seven spot in that frame.
The first three scores for the visitors came on RBI singles by
Jenzen Torres,
Jordan Whitman and
Charles Ball.
Chris Miller opened the fifth-inning rally with a single before
Joseph Eusebio promptly sent a triple into centerfield.
Back-to-back CSUDH errors helped extend the inning and two-straight doubles from Torres and
Donald Walter capped off the run outburst. Toros' starting pitcher Sean Wardour finished with four innings while allowing 10 hits and five scores.
Right-hander
Kevin Bosson got the start for the Broncos and allowed just one hit through the first four innings. The CSUDH attack came alive in the middle innings though, scoring one in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh. Centerfielder Devon Ramirez collected four hits out of the ninth spot in the Toros' order while Chris Allen totaled three RBI.
Senior right-hander
Jake Reed provided key relief out of the bullpen for the Broncos, as he threw the final 2.2 innings and didn't allow an earned run despite scattering five hits. He collected three strikeouts. Bosson earned his first win of the 2012 season with 6.1 innings and five earned runs allowed.
Joining Salgado with multi-hit efforts were Torres (3-for-5), Miller (2-for-5), Eusebio (3-for-5), Ball (2-for-4) and
Chris Curtis (2-for-4). The Broncos and Toros will resume their series on Friday with another 2 p.m. game in Carson.
