POMONA, Calif. - With nearly everyone on the roster getting involved, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised to a 16-4 home victory Tuesday in a non-conference game against Grand Canyon of the PacWest Conference.
The two teams combined to use 15 pitchers and the Broncos' six hurlers allowed just nine hits and two walks. Meanwhile, the CPP attack collected 22 hits and nine free passes.
It didn't look pretty early for the Broncos as the hosts trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. CPP totaled 14 scores in its final four turns at the plate though to take the 16-4 result, which improves the Broncos to 23-13 and drops GCU to 19-17.
CPP batted around in the seventh inning, scoring 10 runs on eight hits in that frame. Out of the Broncos' 22 hits on the day, 19 were singles. Eight players ended up with multi-hit performances, led by a 4-for-6 performance from freshman second baseman Nicholas Cooksey.
Sophomore third baseman
Humberto Tovalin knocked the host's first extra-base hit of the day, sending a double into the left-center gap that scored
Brennen Salgado to pull CPP within a 3-2 score during the bottom of the fifth.
With CPP leading 5-4 in the seventh, senior rightfielder
Chris Curtis lined a stand-up triple down the rightfield line to allow
Mike Santora to race home. Later in the inning, Cooksey delivered a sharp double down the leftfield line to bring in Tovalin and
Mike Philp.
Chris Miller and Curtis finished with three hits apiece while Miller added two walks to reach base in five of his six plate appearances. All nine spots in the Broncos' batting order contributed at least one hit on the day.
In terms of CPP's pitching Tuesday,
Shane Philipps,
Matt Fitzgerald and
Kyle McNutt combined for three scoreless innings to conclude the contest with the Lopes. Redshirt freshman
Chris Powell, an Upland, Calif., native, secured his first career victory with a solid outing of 2.2 innings while allowing one earned run and zero hits.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday with a 3 p.m. game marking the start of a four-game series against Cal State Stanislaus. The visiting Warriors are one spot ahead of CPP in the conference standings.
