CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona's
Jose Marquez placed first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational to highlight a strong showing by the Broncos' distance runners.
A senior from Redlands, Calif., Marquez posted a 9:23.21 mark in the event to cross the line about two seconds in front of second-place finisher Sergio Rodriguez of Cal Baptist. The time for Marquez narrowly missed the "B" provisional qualifying mark of 9:20.
Freshman
Brandon Haugen nearly matched his season best in the 1,500-meter run Saturday as he finished with a 4:09.21 mark to place 43rd overall. His top 2012 time in the event came on March 10 at Cal State Fullerton when he crossed the line in 4:08.94.
Clark Selters, a senior competing in his hometown of Claremont Saturday, turned in the Broncos' top 5,000-meter mark of the day with a time of 16:00.85. Junior
Andres Zavala also raced in that event and posted a 16:44.15 mark.
CPP will return to action on Friday with a select group of Broncos competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut.
