POMONA, Calif. - Same story, different day.
For the third time in the past three days, a Cal Poly Pomona starting pitcher threw a complete game. This time it was
Erick Ruvalcaba, who held Cal State Stanislaus to one run Monday while collecting eight strikeouts.
The junior right-hander's gem paired with the timely hitting of
Mike Santora,
Joseph Eusebio and
Jordan Whitman helped the Broncos capture a 3-1 victory in the series finale to pull within just 0.008 percentage points of third place in the
conference standings. The top four teams advance to the CCAA Tournament, which will be held May 10 through May 12 at UC San Diego.
CPP holds marks of 26-14 overall and 18-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), remaining at the No. 5 spot with eight league games left in the regular season. The Broncos have won two-straight series and improve to 7-2 in the month of April.
Monday's series finale with the Warriors concluded CPP's nine-game homestand at Scolinos Field, where the Broncos have gone 18-6 so far in 2012. CPP will host its final home games on Saturday with a doubleheader against Cal State L.A. as part of "Senior Day." The pregame ceremony is set to start at 10:45 a.m.
The Broncos posted all three of their runs Monday in the first three innings, tallying one score in each frame. In the first, Eusebio delivered a two-out double to bring in Santora. Then in the second, Whitman led off with a towering homer over the centerfield fence to push CPP's edge to 2-0.
The third and final run for the Broncos came in the third with the bases loaded, when Eusebio sent a ground-ball out to second that allowed Santora to cross home. Meanwhile, Ruvalcaba methodically worked through the Warriors' lineup and forced the visitors to strand seven nine runners on the day. The Whittier, Calif., native improved to 6-0 on the season with the Monday performance.
Across the four-game series with CSUS,
Donald Walter and Whitman paced the host's offense with six hits apiece. Senior first baseman
Chris Miller led the team in extra-base hits (3) and runs batted in (5). The Broncos' four starting pitchers allowed just three earned runs over 33.1 innings pitched.
The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. non-conference game at Azusa Pacific. The Cougars are 33-8 overall this season and own an 18-1 mark at home.
