Senior Jacob Deavers, a Lake Elsinore native, earned All-American honors last year in the 400-meter hurdles.
Already a decorated student-athlete during his time at Cal Poly Pomona, senior Jacob Deavers is working hard to eclipse last year's marks with his outstanding production on the track. In his latest competition at the Cal-Nevada Invite, Deavers and the 4x400 relay team registered a second-place time of 3:13:24 which ranks 10th in the all-time Broncos' record books. Deavers also dropped his “B” provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles event to a career-best 52.18. Next up for Deavers and the Broncos is the Tiny Lister Invitational on Saturday at Cal State L..A. Sport Information Intern Jaymin Villaluz was able to catch up with the All-American to discuss the 2012 season, aspirations to top his coach's personal best and much more.
Q: What have been the top moments of your senior season so far?
Deavers: All the memories with my teammates that I will take from this experience and remember forever.
Q: After earning All-American honors last year, what goals did you take into 2012?
Deavers: My goal this season is to be national champion. My performances last year made me realize to myself that that goal is within reach and is a very realistic goal. Another goal of mine is to beat [head coach] Troy Johnson's personal best in the 400 hurdles.
Q: From your time as a freshman to now, what lessons have made the biggest impact on you as a student-athlete?
Deavers: Never underestimate what you can achieve. The mind is a powerful thing and when you believe you can do something and work hard for it you can achieve anything.
Q: With all of the dedication needed to be a student-athlete, what motivates you?
Deavers: I want to be able to look back on this experience and ask myself if I gave it 110 percent effort and didn't hold anything back and be able to answer yes to that.
Q: Outside of track and field, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Deavers: In the offseason I like to go dirtbike riding, playing with radio-controlled trucks and airplanes and I like to play computer games.
Q: Once your track and field career at CPP ends, what will you miss the most?
Deavers: Hanging out with all my teammates and coaches while enjoying all the good times we had.
Q: Can you talk a little bit about your plans for after graduation?
Deavers: After graduation I want to get a job in the career of civil engineering and get engaged to my girlfriend Krystal.
Q: What advice do you like giving to the new members of the Broncos' track and field team?
Deavers: Give your whole effort everyday and every practice because it all pays off in the end.
Q: If you were not a track and field student-athlete, what is another sport you'd like to compete in at the collegiate level?
Deavers: In high school I was on the wrestling team and played football so either of those sports are ones that I also would of liked to compete in during college.
Q: A hypothetical but not totally unrealistic question. After graduation, you have the choice of a career as a superhero. Which superhero would you choose to be?
Deavers: Batman because he has all the best gadgets.
