LOS ANGELES - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team held a 6-3 lead late in Friday's series opener at Cal State L.A. but the host Golden Eagles rallied for six runs in the eighth to secure a 9-6 comeback win.
The result drops the Broncos into sixth place with a conference mark of 18-15. CSULA slides into a tie for fourth with Sonoma State at 16-13.
The Broncos' offense got going early Friday, putting two runs on the board in the first inning as
Donald Walter and
Chris Miller knocked doubles in that frame.
The hits continued for CPP in the second as Nicholas Cooksey and
Chris Curtis collected doubles of their own after
Charles Ball led off with a walk.
The Broncos pushed their edge to 5-0 in the third when
Joseph Eusebio provided a one-out single and Miller followed with a triple.
Moving into the bottom half of the third, the Golden Eagles got on the board after a Jeremy Weber two-run homer over the leftfield fence.
During the middle innings, both starting pitchers - CPP's
Kevin Bosson and CSULA's Ryan Santhon - held the offenses scoreless. Bosson retired six hitters in a row at one point but the Golden Eagles tacked on a run in the seventh to trim the margin to 5-3.
After an unearned score in the top of the eighth brought the Broncos' lead back to three runs at 6-3, the Golden Eagles' offense countered with a huge six-run rally in the bottom of that inning to take a 9-6 advantage. That rally for the hosts featured a two-run homer by James Wharton and the go-ahead RBI by Weber.
CSULA reliever Jacob Valenzuela pitched a scoreless ninth to notch the save and wrap up the 9-6 victory. Miller paced the Broncos' offense Friday with a 3-for-4 effort that included two extra-base hits.
CPP will host its final home games on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Golden Eagles as part of "Senior Day." The pregame ceremony is set to start at 10:45 a.m.
