POMONA, Calif. - Saturday's "Senior Day" at Scolinos Field featured two complete-game gems but one came from each team as Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. split the doubleheader, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 series edge heading into Sunday's finale of the four-contest set.
Senior right-hander
Geoff Broussard threw nine shutout innings in game one to guide the Broncos to a 6-0 victory. The visiting CSULA squad countered in the second contest though as Gabriel Asakura tossed seven stellar innings to help the Golden Eagles secure a 4-1 win and retake the series lead.
The seventh-place Broncos now hold a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) mark of 19-16, putting them just 0.005 percentage points out of the fourth spot in the
conference standings. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top four teams advance to the CCAA postseason.
This week's conference series for CPP will conclude Sunday with a 1 p.m. game to be held at CSULA's Reeder Field.
Game One: Broncos 6, Golden Eagles 0
The Broncos' offense provided more than enough run support for Broussard during Saturday's contest as the hosts staked a 5-0 lead after four innings completed.
CPP got on the board with a single run in the third as that rally started on
Donald Walter getting hit by a pitch. Following a wild pitch,
Jenzen Torres singled to move Walter over to third. The hit by Torres marked No. 200 of his career and he collected three more Saturday to move into 10th all-time in the Broncos' record books for that statistic. Walter ended up scoring in the inning on a ground-ball double play.
The Broncos struck for four scores in the bottom of the fourth, which included a two-run homer over the leftfield fence by senior
Chris Curtis. The two other runs batted in during the frame came from
Charles Ball and Torres.
Broussard pitched consistently well through his sixth complete game and second shutout of 2012. The Rancho Cucamonga native retired the last eight hitters he faced to wrap up his 10th win of the year while needing just 98 pitches to complete Saturday's start.
Through his four years as a Bronco, Broussard is 22-7 with a 3.26 earned run average. He's also totaled 195 strikeouts in 256.2 innings pitched.
Game Two: Golden Eagles 4, Broncos 1
Asakura, the 2011 CCAA Co-Pitcher of the Year, demonstrated his poise with a dominant seven-inning performance in game two. The senior righty allowed five hits and just one earned run despite striking out only one batter. Through the middle portion of the contest, Asakura retired 15-straight hitters.
The Broncos did have an early lead though as the hosts scored once in the bottom of the first when Walter and Torres initiated a one-out rally with back-to-back singles. A well-executed delayed steal by
Joseph Eusebio with two outs allowed Walter to cross the plate and give CPP the 1-0 edge.
The advantage didn't last long for the Broncos as the Golden Eagles rallied for a big innings in the second. After three singles, CSULA second baseman Joe Park knocked a grand slam beyond the leftfield fence to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.
That proved to be all Asakura needed as CPP failed to get a baserunner from the second through the fifth. The Broncos combined for three hits in the final two innings but couldn't produce a run.
