LOS ANGELES - A hard-fought 11-inning battle between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. ended on one pitch, a Jeremy Weber walk-off solo shot for the host Golden Eagles.
The result puts CSULA in a tie for fourth place in the
conference standings at 18-14 while holding the Broncos in seventh place at 19-17 through
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The top four teams based on winning percentage will advance to the conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles staked an early 2-0 lead Sunday, scoring twice in the second inning. Chad Nacapoy and Jeremy Weber provided back-to-back singles with two outs to cap off that CSULA rally.
The visiting CPP squad countered with a run in the top of the third after
Chris Curtis opened the inning with a single and then proceeded to steal second base. Sophomore outfielder
Joseph Eusebio delivered in a two-strike and two-out situation, lining a single to centerfield that brought in Curtis to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 2-1.
The game progressed into a pitching duel between the two starters, CPP's
Erick Ruvalcaba and CSULA's Justin Harr. The offenses went scoreless through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Broncos managed to tie the score at 2-2 with a manufactured run. Freshman Nicholas Cooksey initiated the rally with a single to the right-center gap. Curtis followed with a bunt single and then senior
Mike Santora sacrificed both runners over. A fielder's choice RBI by
Donald Walter evened the tally between CPP and CSULA.
Despite working up a high pitch count, Ruvalcaba kept his compusure and worked out a two-baserunner jam in the bottom of the eighth to keep the 2-2 score and shut down the two-out Golden Eagles' rally.
Broncos' senior catcher
Jenzen Torres almost broke the tie in the top of the ninth but his deep fly to the left-center gap with two outs was caught just in front of the wall.
Although CSULA put its first two hitters on base in the bottom half of the ninth, Ruvalcaba's strong pitching combined with the slick fielding of Curtis and Torres helped CPP work out of the treacherous jam and send the contest into extras.
After two quick outs in the top of the tenth, the Broncos loaded the bases with help from singles by
Jordan Whitman and Cooksey. A ground-ball out ended the rally and turned things over to the Golden Eagles' offense. Continuing the trend of leaving runners on base, CSULA stranded two in the bottom of the 10th and the game moved to inning No. 11.
CPP went scoreless in the top half of the 11th and that set the stage for Weber's one-out homer over the tall fence in right-center. That winning hit was allowed by Broncos' reliever
Jake Reed. Ruvalcaba got a no-decision after allowing just one walk through his 10 innings pitched. Eusebio, Cooksey, Whitman and Curtis finished with two hits apiece.
Up next for the Broncos will be a four-game road series at Cal State East Bay. The first game of that set will start Friday at 3 p.m.
