POMONA, Calif. - Although the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team didn't get its first hit until the sixth inning Thursday, the Broncos' offense broke though late in a big way en route to an 8-2 comeback victory over San Francisco State.
Junior right-hander
Erick Ruvalcaba certainly did his part for the host CPP squad, throwing all nine innings while allowing just one earned run. The Whittier, Calif., native struck out eight and bumped his 2012 record to 5-0. The strikeout total of eight falls just one short of matching his career high.
The results raises the Broncos' marks to 20-12 overall and 13-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The visiting Gators fall to 12-16 overall and 9-12 through conference play. The two squads will resume the four-game series Friday with a 1 p.m. game.
SFSU manufactured a run in the first inning Thursday when Andrew Suvunnachuen grounded out to allow Dustin Wold to cross home. The Gators then got an unearned score in the second and carried the 2-0 edge through until the bottom of the seventh.
Meanwhile, SFSU left-handed starter Ryan DeJesus kept CPP hitless in the first five innings before Broncos' third baseman
Chris Curtis knocked a single to start the sixth.
Ultimately, the much needed jumpstart came when senior catcher
Jenzen Torres served as the leadoff hitter in the seventh. He launched a towering homer over the leftfield fence that marked his team-leading fifth shot of 2012. After
Joseph Eusebio followed with a single, junior outfielder
Jordan Whitman delivered with a clutch two-run homer to put the Broncos ahead 3-2.
While Ruvalcaba continued to work effectively in the eighth to keep the host's lead at 3-2, senior first baseman
Chris Miller provided CPP with plenty of insurance runs in the bottom of that inning when he knocked a grand slam beyond the leftfield fence. In the end, the Broncos totaled 10 hits with all of them coming in the team's final three turns at the plate.
Although the CPP offense didn't come alive until the later innings, the Broncos proved efficient with just three runners left on base. The hosts also kept their strikeouts to a minimum with just four on the afternoon. Eusebio and freshman
Brennen Salgado both contributed 2-for-4 performances Thursday at the plate.
