POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team broke out the bats in a big way early Saturday at Scolinos Field, tallying a 20-4 rout in the first game of the doubleheader against San Francisco State.
The results in game two turned sour for the Broncos though as Gators' starting right-hander Brandon Petrangelo threw a complete-game gem to lead the visitors to a 3-2 comeback victory while SFSU avoided a series sweep.
The Broncos now hold marks of 23-12 overall and 15-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), which keep CPP in sixth place in the conference standings but just one win out of fourth. The top four teams will advance into the CCAA Tournament, which is to be held from May 10 through May 12 at UC San Diego.
Junior outfielder
Donald Walter starred in the game one blowout Saturday as he went 4-for-5 at the plate with five runs scored. Senior right-hander
Geoff Broussard threw 6.1 innings in the first contest to earn the win, his ninth of the season to move into a tie for the Division II lead in that statistic.
Fellow fourth-year hurler
Allen Rodarte received his first career start on the mound in game two and kept the Broncos close while totaling 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs. The Anaheim, Calif., native gave up just three hits and struck out four SFSU batters.
The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. non-conference home game against Grand Canyon at Scolinos Field. CPP then continues its homestand with a four-game weekend set as Cal State Stanislaus visits town.
Game One: Broncos 20, Gators 4
The two squads played evenly through the early innings in game one as the Broncos held a slim 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. CPP secured those four early scores thanks to key singles from
Joseph Eusebio,
Chris Miller and
Jenzen Torres along with a perfect delayed steal that allowed Walter to cross home.
The Broncos' offense really got going in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings as the hosts totaled 13 of their 20 runs through those frames. Helped by the run support, Broussard turned in another solid outing and exited after 6.1 innings with CPP holding a 11-3 edge.
The Broncos managed to get four runs in the sixth on just two hits while benefiting from two walks, a hit batter and an error on the SFSU defense. Gators' left-handed starter Trae Lopez lasted just 5.2 innings and gave up 11 hits along with 10 earned runs.
CPP continued to take advantage of fielding mistakes and lack of control from the opposing pitches as the Broncos tallied four scores in the seventh on three hits. In that frame, Torres and Eusebio contributed RBI walks,
Humberto Tovalin added a sacrifice fly and
Jordan Whitman lined a two-out single through the infield to bring in pinch runner
Michael Johnson.
A junior outfielder from Cypress, Calif., Whitman capped off another big rally in the eighth with a two-run double down the rightfield line that pushed the Broncos' advantage to 20-4. That proved to be the final score as
Jake Reed and
Matt Fitzgerald providing a combined 2.2 innings of no-hit ball in relief for CPP. Fitzgerald's appearance marked the first of his career.
Game Two: Gators 3, Broncos 2
The Broncos once again jumped out to a lead in game two, scoring twice in the third inning on a rally started by a double from senior
Mike Santora. Continuing their strong performances at the plate Saturday, Eusebio and Torres delivered two-out RBI hits to put CPP ahead.
Rodarte took the 2-0 edge into the later innings of the seven-inning contest but ran into trouble in the sixth. Dante Smith and Dustin Wold began the frame with back-to-back hits and after a sacrice bunt, Rodarte was replaced by reliever
Jake Reed. The inherited runners ended up scoring and with two outs, Matt Quintero knocked the eventual game-winning hit through the right side.
Petrangelo completed his stellar outing with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the 3-2 comeback win for the visitors. The SFSU right-handed starter finished with eight strikeouts while allowing zero walks.
