Travis Taijeron Earns South Atlantic League Honor

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Former Cal Poly Pomona baseball standout Travis Taijeron has continued his success in the minor leagues after being drafted by the New York Mets in the 18th round of the first-year player draft on June 7, 2011.

Taijeron, an outfielder on the A-Level Savannah Sand Gnats, was announced as the South Atlantic League's Offensive Player of the Week on May 7.

In six games spanning from April 30 to May 6, the San Diego native went 13-for-24 while totaling three home runs, three doubles, one triple, nine runs and 12 runs batted in. In a single game on April 30, Taijeron went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, one double, two home runs and five RBI.

The 23-year-old leads the Gnats in home runs and RBIs with seven and 23, respectively. With a mark of .321 he also holds the team's second-highest batting average and leads the Gnats in walks (20) and total bases (66).

In the league, the former Bronco ranks second in home runs, third in slugging percentage (.606) and seventh in RBIs. In a pair of the Gnats' most recent victories, Taijeron went a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored, two doubles and three walks.

Taijeron spent the first season of his minor league career with the Short-Season A Brooklyn Cyclones in New York. While in New York, the 2011 NCAA Division II All-American was named to the New York-Penn League Mid-Season All-Star team and helped the Cyclones reach the semifinals.

In his senior season at CPP, Taijeron was named the 2011 Most Valuable Player by the California Collegiate Athletic Association, West Region Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and was also named to the ABCA Rawlings Division II Gold Glove Team.
