POMONA, Calif. - Eighty days and counting down. That's the gap between today and Nov. 10, the date of the 2012-13 season opener for Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball.
Broncos' head coach
Danelle Bishop, who is entering her third season with the program, announced the
complete schedule on Thursday. The 26-game regular season slate features the highly-competitive 22 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contests paired with four non-conference matchups.
CPP starts its 2012-13 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a Saturday road game against Dixie State at
Burns Arena in St. George, Utah. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. PDT and 3 p.m. MDT. The two squads last met on Dec. 10, 2011, with the Broncos securing a 70-52 home victory. The Red Storm of DSC, a team playing out of the Pacific West Conference, finished last season at 18-8 overall and 13-5 in league action.
The Broncos will play their 2012-13 home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 14, as they host
Fresno Pacific for a 6 p.m. matchup at Kellogg Gym. The Sunbirds of FPU are entering their first full NCAA Division II schedule this year as members of the PacWest. FPU is in year two of the three-year transition process from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to the NCAA. The Sunbirds finished 2011-12 with records of 14-17 overall and 6-12 within the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).
For CPP, the CCAA schedule begins the week of Thanksgiving with a Saturday, Nov. 24, contest at
Humboldt State. The Broncos will host the Jacks of HSU two weeks later in CPP's conference home opener with a special start time of 6:30 p.m.
In the middle of December, the Broncos will challenge a pair of Southern California non-conference opponents in the Azusa Pacific Invitational. CPP takes on
Point Loma Nazarene at 2 p.m. on Dec. 18 and then the following day, the Broncos challenge the tournament host squad,
APU, at 4 p.m.
CPP has four Thursday regular season home games in the 2012-13 season and the two in January will draw plenty of attention. The Broncos host
UC San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 3, and then two weeks later,
Sonoma State visits Kellogg Gym as part of "Pack the Stands Night."
In the same fashion as last year, CPP concludes its 2012-13 regular season with home contests against
Cal State L.A. and
Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros and Broncos will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in Kellogg Gym on Friday, March 1, for the regular season finale. That date will also feature "Senior Night" and "Return of the Pack" festivities.
The CCAA Championship Tournament will begin play at campus sites on Tuesday, March 5, before the semifinals and finals are played at
Citizens Business Bank Arena on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9.
The CPP women's basketball team has reached the semifinal round of the CCAA Championship Tournament three times in the five-year history of the event and captured the conference title in 2011 when the tournament was held at Pioneer Gym on the campus of Cal State East Bay.
