SAN DIEGO – Aneska Alino certainly has a knack for knocking in game-winning goals.
Her latest heroics took place at Point Loma Nazarene Thursday as she helped the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team pick up a 2-1 season-opening win. Alino's goal in the 40th minute proved to be the deciding score in a hard-fought match between the Broncos and Sea Lions.
A sophomore from San Jose, Alino has totaled nine shots so far in her Broncos' career. She has scored four goals and three of those have been game-winners.
CPP will now take a 1-0-0 record into conference play, which starts in one week with a Friday 12:30 p.m. matchup at Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos play their home opener on Friday, Sept. 21.
Thursday's 2-1 road win also continues CPP's success in season-opening games. During head coach Isabelle Harvey's seven-year tenure, the Broncos are 7-0 in the first game on the schedule.
Senior midfielder
Veronica Ramos appeared in her first match with CPP Thursday and made an impressive debut. The Walnut, Calif., native, got the Broncos on the board early with a goal just two minutes and 35 seconds into the contest. Fellow fourth-year
Cindy Paez earned the assist on the play.
It only took 27 seconds for the host PLNU squad to find the equalizer though, as Brooke Winklepleck knocked a shot into the lower left corner of the net to even the score at 1-1.
Alino entered the match in the 19th minute and put a shot on goal less than five minutes later. That first attempt was saved but with her second opportunity at the 39:33 mark, Alino found the back of the net. After receiving a pass from Paez, Alino beat the goalkeeper on a one-on-one chance and placed a shot inside the left post to give the Broncos a 2-1 edge.
While Ramos and Alino were providing the offensive firepower, the CPP defense was holding steady.
Kristin Mihara,
Megan Kisslan and
Nicole Killigrew played the full 90 minutes while fellow starter
Hannah Leu also contributed a strong performance. The Broncos held the Sea Lions to just one shot on goal through the entire match.
Mihara, a junior from Redondo Beach, continued an impressive streak that dates back to Oct. 22, 2010. She has played every minute of every match for 23 consecutive contests.
