PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Friday, the opening day of the Broncos' 2012 season.
In the early afternoon, CPP dropped a 3-0 decision to 13th-ranked Metro State. Later in the day, the Broncos fell by a 3-1 score to West Region challenger Central Washington.
Senior outside hitter
Diana Lake and sophomore middle blocker
Lauren Jones provided the highlights for the CPP offense as the pair collected kill totals of 22 and 16 respectively over the two matches Friday. Jones also added nine block assists and a solo block in the 3-1 loss to the Wildcats of CWU.
The Broncos will resume tournament play on Saturday with two matches to conclude this week's Arizona trip. CPP will challenge UC Colorado Springs (0-2) at 11:30 a.m. and then Western New Mexico (0-2) at 4:30 p.m.

Both the Broncos and Roadrunners struggled with service errors in the season opener, as the two squads combined to commit 19.
In picking up the 3-0 sweep, MSU outhit CPP by a margin of .290 to .069. Despite the team having a tough time generating offense, freshman outside hitter

Another first-year player,
Nicoletta Stork, paced the Broncos in assists with 11. Stork assisted a kill by
Jessica Doerner to take a 12-11 lead in the first game but the Roadrunners pulled away late by finishing on a 7-1 run.
MSU built up a more consistent lead in the second game and four-straight attack errors by CPP led to a final score of 25-15. The Broncos put up a better fight in the third and finale game as Lake and Thierjung helped guide the CPP attack. Trailing 24-19, the Broncos won three-straight points before the Roadrunners' Amy Wong finished the match with a kill.
Central Washington 3, Cal Poly Pomona 1
The Broncos jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first game against Central Washington, with a
Taylr Kreutziger and Doerner combining for a block to cap off that early rally.
CWU took over later in the game though, holding a slim 21-20 edge before a kill by Erin Smith started a 4-0 run to close out the frame for the Wildcats.
In the second game, CPP once again staked an early advantage. Back-to-back kills by Jones gave the Broncos a 6-2 lead but CWU used an 11-2 spurt to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 15-9 edge. Setter Catie Fry continued to guide the Wildcats' offense as she finished with 60 assists in the match.
CPP won their first game of the season, taking a 25-23 decision in the fourth. The Broncos once again built an early lead and held onto it for most of the game. CPP lost the lead momentarily at 22-21 but took four of the next five points to trim CWU's lead in games to 2-1. Lake provided kills on three of the final five points of the third game.
The Wildcats seized the mometum in the fourth game, rolling out to an 11-2 lead. The Broncos slowly trimmed away at the wide margin, making it a 22-19 difference after a double block from
