POMONA, Calif. – For the second-straight game Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team saw its early lead disappear. But for the second-straight game, the Broncos maintained their confidence and offensive pressure to rally late for another win.
Senior midfielder
Abraham Gomez scored twice, lifting CPP to a 2-1 home victory over Point Loma Nazarene in the final non-conference contest before California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action begins Friday.
The Broncos' defense held tough Saturday, restricting the visiting Sea Lions to just two shots on goal through the entire match.
Abiel Coronado,
Liam Hall and
Justyn Peeples played the full 90 minutes to bolster the backline.
"It was a great team win today," Broncos' interim head coach Erik Garcia said. "After Point Loma got the goal to tie it up, our team's reaction was to stay positive. We still need to keep improving and working hard."
Overall, CPP outshot the visitors 19-6 and earned seven corner kicks to PLNU's four. The intensity of play heightened in the second half with four cautions being issued.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard at the 29:00 mark as junior
Matt Boudreau initiated the play with a long throw-in from the left side. After Coronado deflected the ball, Gomez didn't waste any time blasting a shot into the bottom right corner of the net past Sea Lions' goalkeeper Carter Phillips.
CPP almost broke through for a second score later in the half when
Tony Bichai slipped a through ball to Boudreau racing toward the box. Phillips made a nice diving stop on Boudreau's sliding shot to keep the score at 1-0. The two teams took that score into halftime after the Broncos put up nine shots through the first 45 minutes while PLNU attempted just one.
The Sea Lions temporarily reversed the momentum early in the second half, when Erick Friessen tapped a rebound shot across the line in the 47th minute to even the score at 1-1. Kenny Ortega got the play started with a cross before Daniel ten Bosch took the initial attempt and Friessen got possession up close at the far post.
Although Broncos' senior goalkeeper
Kris Minton didn't get the opportunity to make more than a couple saves Saturday, he was able to contribute to the CPP offense. In the 72nd minute, he sent a long punt up the field to freshman forward
Brandon Cortez. Using his speed, Cortez cut into the box and lined a shot that Phillips initially saved. The ball caromed a few feet away and Gomez quickly controlled it before lining it into the back of the net to give the Broncos a 2-1 edge.
The one-goal margin held up for the remaining 18 minutes and CPP improved to 2-0. Up next for the Broncos will be a Friday road match at local rival Cal State San Bernardino. It'll represent the CCAA opener for both teams.
