PHOENIX – With
Lauren Jones putting together an offensive performance worthy of a spot in the all-time record books, the Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team secured its first win of 2012 with a sweep of Western New Mexico Saturday night at the Grand Canyon Invitational.
Through the three-game match, Jones tallied 11 kills in 16 attempts. She did not commit a single attack error. Those achievements put Jones' attack percentage at .688, the sixth-best single-match mark in the Broncos' record books and the third-best rate since 1983.
Contributing to the Jones' record performance were setters
Katie Colin and
Nicoletta Stork, who collected assist totals of 20 and 19 respectively.
CPP (1-3) will return home to co-host a three-day tournament with Cal State L.A. For more information on next week's matches in Pomona, go to

The Broncos and Mountain Lions battled through a hard-fought first game as the margin didn't widen more than two points through the first half of the frame. Trailing 13-12, CPP rattled off six-straight points to take an 18-13 edge.
That spurt started with a kill by junior
Jessica Doerner, who then served the next six points for the Broncos. Senior
Jamie Kidd earned three assists and a kill through that CPP rally. UCCS managed to put together a rally of its own though, tying the score at 18-18 thanks in part to a pair of service aces from Kim Catlett.
After the two squads traded points a few times, a big combined block from Doerner and
Taylr Kreutziger put the Broncos ahead 24-20. Facing game point, the Mountain Lions reeled off six-consecutive points to take the 26-24 result.
The momentum shift in favor of UCCS carried over into the rest of the match, with the Mountain Lions jumping out to an 11-4 edge in the second game. CPP fell in that frame, 25-15, as UCCS continued to excel at the net. The Mountain Lions finished with 14.5 team blocks in the match, including six block assists by Megan Koop.
A kill from
Diana Lake midway through the third game gave the Broncos a 14-13 lead but UCCS once again pulled away late, this time with a 12-2 run to close out the contest. Lake ended up with a team-high 10 kills while senior libero
Kelly Bonja contributed 21 digs.

Freshman
Alexa Hasen provided a pair of kills to get the Broncos going in the first game and Bonja followed shortly thereafter with a pair of service aces. CPP quickly built up a sizeable lead and Jones started her work on offense later in the frame, notching two kills in the first game that ended in an easy 25-14 result for the Broncos.
The second game proved to be quite a bit closer and once again, Jones got going in the later half of the frame. She broke a 14-14 tie with her first kill of the game and she collected three more before it was over. CPP clung to a 23-22 lead but Kreutziger and Jones provided the final two points on kills to make it a 25-22 result.
The Broncos carried that momentum into the third game, which CPP started on a 6-0 run with strong play from a trio of first-year players. Four kills in the Broncos' first seven points came from Stork or Hasen, while
Zoe Herrera added a service ace in that span.
The WNMU Mustangs, a squad that defeated CPP 3-2 last year at Kellogg Gym, stormed back in the third game to take a 17-16 edge. The two teams continued the rest of the frame in a back-and-forth struggle and WNMU even took a 24-23 lead to threaten the possibility of a fourth game. Colin assisted a Lake kill to tie the score and a pair of Jones kills helped the Broncos capture a thrilling 28-26 result to wrap up the sweep.
