TURLOCK, Calif. – Saturday night the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team went up against Cal State Stanislaus and gave the spectators a glimpse of how successful they could be in the 2012 season. The Broncos took a well deserved 3-0 victory over the warriors who played well but were no match for CPPs all around team.
Tonight's game showed an extremely strong Bronco offense and defense. The freshmen on the team showed an impressive attacking strength.
Alexa Hasen,
Nicoletta Stork, and
Brianna Thierjung all posted a minimum personal hitting percentage of .500.
Senior outside hitter
Diana Lake was a key player and did consistently well throughout the match earning 13 kills and 12 defensive digs.
The Warriors and the Broncos were neck-and-neck during the beginning of the first set, tying the score 10 times before either team reached 13 points.
CPP then surged ahead taking advantage of several pivotal attack errors by CSUS as well as serving up a strong offense themselves. The Broncos took the first set at a comfortable 25-17.
After their success in the first set, the Broncos really kicked it up a notch taking an early 7-2 lead with the help of Seniors
Taylr Kreutziger and
Diana Lake as well as Junior outside hitter
Jessica Doerner. The Warriors made a valiant attempt at a comeback, even tying the game at 12-12 but the Broncos truly gelled as a team tonight leaving the Warriors in the dust and quickly ending the second set 25-15.
Senior libero
Kelly Bonja, junior defensive specialist
Erin Noriega, and freshman defensive specialist
Zoe Herrera played exceptionally well in the second and third sets finishing the match with a combined 32 defensive digs. The trio was also responsible for 4 aces and several significant serving runs throughout the match.
The Broncos kicked off the third and final set by taking an early and substantial lead that even a Warrior timeout at 5-1 could not disrupt. Trailing for the remainder of the game by a minimum of 4 points, the Warriors quickly fell to the Broncos 25-18.
CPP comes home to Kellogg Gym for their next match against UC San Diego on Thursday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
