POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team came close to forcing a fifth game Thursday against UC San Diego but gave up a late rally to the Tritons, who secured a 3-1 victory to spoil any chance of a CPP celebration at the Broncos' conference home opener.
The crowd of 512 fans, which featured many members of
The Herd, had plenty to cheer about early as CPP staked a 1-0 lead with a 25-20 win in the first game. UCSD rallied to take the final three games to collect the comeback victory.
The Broncos fall to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Meanwhile, the visiting Tritons improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
Diana Lake and
Taylr Kreutziger paced the CPP attack in kills Thursday with totals of 13 and 11 respectively.
The Broncos' setters performed well, collecting 47 assists with
Katie Colin,
Nicoletta Stork and
Jamie Kidd receiving nearly equal distribution. Senior libero
Kelly Bonja led the host squad in digs with 18.
CPP built up a steady lead in the first game, breaking a 12-12 tie with four-straight kills as Lake and
Lauren Jones tallied two apiece in that span. Jones closed out the game with a kill off a Colin assist.
The visiting UCSD reversed the momentum quickly in the second frame, jumping out to a 6-1 edge with an efficient attack. The Tritons ended up capturing a 25-16 win in that game and leading the offense was Danielle Dahle, who finished the night with 19 kills.
The third game proved to be quite close before UCSD built up a 21-16 advantage later on. The Broncos battled back with a rally that featured
Alexa Hasen and
Jessica Doerner prominently. The two combined for a block that gave CPP a sideout and then the Broncos got three-straight points with two kills from Hasen and another by Doerner. The Tritons held off the rally though and closed out the third game by a score of 25-23.
UCSD outdid the host Broncos in the blocking category and it showed in the fourth game. The Tritons tallied eight block assists in that frame and one from Amber Hawthorne and Lauren Demos pushed UCSD's lead to 13-6.
CPP showed its resiliency though, pulling to within 19-18 and 21-20 before going on a 4-0 run to take a 24-22 edge. That late rally featured kills from Kidd and Kreutziger and put the Broncos just one point away from forcing a fifth game. The Tritons registered four-consecutive points of their own though, pulling out the dramatic 26-24 result in the fourth and final frame.
