POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss Saturday to Cal State San Bernardino as the Coyotes held the hosts to a .067 hitting percentage.
The Broncos entered the week as the third-ranked blocking team in the conference but managed just one block on Saturday at Kellogg Gym.
Junior outside hitter
Jessica Doerner performed well offensively, totaling seven kills with six of those coming in the second game that finished 25-23.
The loss puts CPP at marks of 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Coyotes, unranked nationally for the first time since 2000, improve to 6-6 overall and 3-1 through league play.
The Broncos got off to a slow start in the first game, allowing CSUSB to take a 20-4 lead as the visitors got strong serving of Danielle Newcome and a series of kills by Mercedes Winchester. By the end of the night, the Coyotes had eight service aces and Winchester paced the visitors with 11 kills.
After falling 25-12 in the first frame, the Broncos battled tough in the second game. Despite trailing 14-8 at one point, CPP rallied to take a 20-19 edge after a long stretch of serves from
Kelly Bonja.
During that span,
Lauren Jones and Doerner paced the Broncos' offense while
Taylr Kreutziger came through with a clutch solo block to tie the score at 19-19.
A
Diana Lake kill gave CPP a 23-21 lead but the Coyotes rallied for four-straight points to take the 25-23 victory in that frame. The momentum swung into CSUSB's favor, as the Coyotes finished the match strong by taking a 25-14 result in the final game.
Bonja finished with a match-high 11 digs while
Jamie Kidd paced CPP in assists with 10. In reserve duty for CSUSB, Ashley Solis hit effectively with an attack percentage of .571. The Coyotes totaled eight team blocks, including four block assists by Winchester.
The Broncos will return to action next weekend with a two-match road trip to Northern California. First, CPP will take on Cal State East Bay on Friday at 7 p.m.
