POMONA, Calif. – Battling one of the top South Division teams in the conference, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Coyotes tallied the equalizing score in the second period though and from there, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw while fighting the tough conditions of temperatures nearing 100 degrees.
The Broncos now hold marks of 2-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while CSUSB settles in at 4-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 through league action.
Alex Abbott, a redshirt freshman from San Diego, made her first career start in net for the Broncos. She got some early tests from the Coyotes' offense, making a leaping save to her right less than five minutes in.
Senior forward
Angela Garcia gave the CPP attack a boost early, sending one shot attempt off the outside of the post and helping
Alison Sauve connect for a shot that CSUSB netminder Priscilla Collings stopped with a diving save.
After a Broncos' attack was pulled down in the box in the 41st minute, senior midfielder
Cindy Paez earned the penalty kick opportunity. She converted with a sharp liner into the upper left corner, giving CPP a 1-0 lead while collecting her first goal of 2012 and third of her career.
The Broncos almost pushed the margin to 2-0 about 16 minutes into the second half, when
Samantha Stiles sent a header just over the bar after a cross from
Veronica Ramos.
The visiting CSUSB squad rallied for the equalizer in the 75th minute though, after Guadalupe Lara sent a slick pass across the box to Jasmine Bell, who slotted a shot to the back of the net from about four yards out.
The match progressed into overtime and CPP continued to get its fair share of chances. In the second OT period, Abbott tried to clear a ball out of the Broncos' box but the ball bounced off a charging Coyotes' forward. Fortunately for CPP, Abbott managed to race back and retrieve the ball as it bounced toward the goalline.
Junior forward
Kaelyn Kaichi gave the Broncos their best scoring chance in overtime, lining a shot just left of the frame with less than three minutes remaining in the match.
CPP outshot the visiting CSUSB squad, 24-19, through the 110 minutes and 6-1 through the overtime periods. The Coyotes earned seven corner kick chances while the Broncos managed only three, all of which came in the first half.
CPP will return to action Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
