HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team collected a hard-fought 3-2 road win Friday at Cal State East Bay to rise above the .500 mark at 7-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The Broncos got season-best performances from three key players:
Taylr Kreutziger,
Nicoletta Stork and
Kelly Bonja. Kreutziger finished with 15 kills, Stork totaled 30 assists and Bonja recorded 33 digs. All three totals are season highs respectively.
The momentum swung back and forth throughout Friday's match, which featured final scores of 25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 17-25, 15-12.
Although the ultimate win and loss were very much in question going into the fifth game, the Broncos took control early in that final frame. Kreutziger combined with fellow senior
Diana Lake for a block that broke a 3-3 tie. From that point on, CPP never relinquished the lead.
The two teams traded leads frequently throughout the match. In the first game, CSUEB took a 22-21 advantage into the later stages of the frame. After a Pioneers' service error, Kreutziger tallied back-to-back kills and Bonja closed out the game with an ace. The senior libero from San Dimas, Calif., finished with four of the Broncos' eight service aces on the evening.
The second game almost mirrored the first but the outcome was reversed. CPP held a 23-21 lead but this time, it was the Pioneers finishing strong. The score moved to 24-24 eventually but CSUEB's Nicole Boyle put up two-straight kills to give the hosts a 26-24 win. Boyle totaled a match-high 21 kills through the entire contest.
CPP freshman
Zoe Herrera served the first five points of the third game, helping the Broncos stake an early 4-0 edge. The rest of the game played out evenly and the teams once again pushed the score to 24-24. Kreutziger turned out to be the hero in this frame, knocking down back-to-back kills to lift the Broncos to a 26-24 result.
Although CPP aimed to close out the contest in the fourth game, the Pioneers' attack raised its game and put together a hitting percentage of .356 in that farme with 19 kills to just three errors. The Broncos pulled to within 15-13 at one point after a kill by
Alexa Hasen but CSUEB finished the game on a 10-4 run to take the 25-17 victory and force the fifth game.
Yet again for CPP, it was Kreutziger and Bonja coming up clutch while
Diana Lake also delivered key contributions. In the fifth game, Kreutziger totaled three kills and a block assist, Bonja added an assist and an ace and Lake came through with three kills.
Junior outside hitter
Jessica Doerner provided a consistent presence for the Broncos' offense Friday as she knocked in 14 kills while hitting at a .244 percentage. Lake also finished with 14 kills.
CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters hold marks of 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
