POMONA, Calif. – Three seconds separated the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team from a second-straight win at Kellogg Field Sunday.
The visiting San Francisco State squad struck for a score at the 89:57 mark though, tying the contest at 1-1 and sending it into overtime.
Neither team could score in the extra periods and the draw result settles the Broncos' records at 3-4-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Gators now stand at 1-6-3 overall and 0-4-3 in league action.
Through the first half of play Sunday, SFSU collected the majority of the scoring chances.
The Broncos' best opportunity came early in the period when
Jesus Mitre dribbled up the left side and rolled a cross into the box for
Ian Trantow. A Gators' defender and Trantow collided but no shot or foul was recorded as the ball rolled out of danger.
In the 32nd minute, a CPP defender got called for a hand ball in the box and that resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for SFSU's Edgar Villagrana. Broncos' senior goalkeeper
Kris Minton managed to stop the PK attempt, diving to his right along the ground to make the stop. This marks the second-straight year that Minton has stopped a PK taken by SFSU.
Because of an injury to Minton, CPP made a keeper change at halftime by bringing in junior
Andrew Todd. The Broncos' offense took some pressure off Todd by breaking through for a score in the 50th minute.
After Mitre threw the ball inbounds along the left side,
Justyn Peeples headed the ball along to
Christopher Rosales at the near post. Rosales sent a header off the crossbar before Trantow got the rebound chance and headed it off the inside of the crossbar. The ball bounced down to the ground, landing just inside the goalline for a score.
It marked the first goal of 2012 for Trantow and the second of his career. The assist for Peeples represents his first career point as a Bronco.
CPP outshot the visitors in the second half, 9-6, but the Gators picked up their intensity in the final minutes. As the 10-second countdown began, Chris Behroozian worked the ball up the left side. He bent a cross into the box to connect with Eilmaz Sarli, who sent a header from seven yards out to the bottom left corner of the net with three seconds remaining.
As the game moved into overtime, both teams struggled to put shots on target. The Broncos tallied the only shot on goal through the 20 minutes of extra time. After picking up a yellow card earlier in the game, SFSU head coach Joe Hunter received a second yellow and subsequent red card at the 104:01 mark to be ejected.
Sunday's match completed a four-game homestand for the Broncos, who will return to action Friday with a 4:30 p.m. match at Cal State L.A.
