POMONA, Calif. – Behind an impressive team effort on the defensive end, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer squad secured a 2-0 home win over San Francisco State Sunday.
Throughout the afternoon match, the Broncos' back line of
Kristin Mihara,
Hannah Leu,
Megan Kisslan and
Sarah Semenero helped goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman keep SFSU scoreless. CPP totaled three team saves as the defenders cleared the ball off the goal line on legitimate scoring chances for the Gators. Rohman, a junior from Santee, now has 10 career shutouts.
It marked the second-straight shutout victory for the Broncos, who now pass SFSU in the South Division standings to move into fourth place. CPP holds marks of 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Gators fall to 4-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 through league play.
The Broncos got on the board in the 18th minute with
Angela Garcia initiating the scoring chance by dribbling up the left side and sending a cross into the box.
Samantha Stiles and an SFSU defender both went for the ball and collided slightly. The ball caromed to Stiles, who promptly placed a shot past Gators' goalkeeper Annicia Jones to put CPP ahead 1-0. It was Stiles' second goal of the season.
Later in the half, the Broncos came close to pushing their lead to 2-0. Sophomore
Aneska Alino drove a cross into the box that connected with
Arika Ontiveros for a header from about four yards out but the attempt sailed just over the bar.
The SFSU attack's best opportunity of the half came with just under four minutes to play in the period. An initial shot from Jordan Salomon was stopped by Rohman but the Gators got two rebound chances and both were cleared away at the line by Broncos' defenders. The score remained 1-0 into halftime as CPP outshot the visitors 9-5 through the first 45 minutes.
The Broncos kept the pressure up in the second half but the Gators managed to sneak in for another dangerous chance at the 67:36 mark. Nicole Vanni received a pass from a teammate and flicked a shot over the head of Rohman. Fortunately for the Broncos, Mihara was there to clear it off the line and out of danger.
CPP tallied an insurance score in the 86th minute, thanks to the offensive creativity of Alino. Taking on two defenders on the right side, Alino worked past both of them to generate a one-on-one chance with the keeper. The San Jose, Calif., native patiently placed a shot to the left of Jones to widen the Broncos' advantage. Alino now has three goals in the past four matches.
Sunday's match completes a four-game homestand for CPP. The Broncos will return to action Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Cal State L.A.
