SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team commenced conference play for the 2012 season on Friday against Cal State San Bernardino at Premier Soccer Field, suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Coyotes in overtime.

CPP falls to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play while CSUSB improves to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 against conference foes.

Upon the conclusion of regulation, Broncos sophomore midfielder Arika Ontiveros had a shot-on-goal only 1:32 into the first overtime. It appeared the Broncos had worn down the Coyotes and were just moments away from scoring the golden goal.

With just 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime, however, freshman forward Leilani Konrad swung the ball to senior forward Jani Carmona-Urbano, who beat junior goalkeeper Sarah Rohman to her left and sent the ball into the corner of the net for her third goal of the year to end the game.

Coyotes senior goalkeeper Priscilla Collings earned the win to progress to 1-0-0 for the season. Collings had two saves in her nearly 70 minutes of work. Rohman moved to 1-1-0 on the year. She played the entire game and recorded six saves, including five in the first half alone. Rohman's five first-half saves were more than both the number of saves Jones and Collings had in the entire game combined.

The Broncos proved to be more dominant in the early moments of the game, keeping the ball deep in Coyote territory. The scoreless tie nearly ended in the 14th minute, when senior forward Angela Garcia moved to her left in front of the goal and attempted a crossing shot-on-goal which was saved by junior goalkeeper Chelsey Jones's dive. It was CPP's only shot-on-goal in the first 45 minutes.

CSUSB also had a couple chances of its own, including freshman midfielder Miranda Corneliussen's 16th-minute shot that sailed over the crossbar.

In the 30th minute of the first half, Jones took a hit which resulted in a stoppage and was replaced by Collings. The Coyotes used this moment to their advantage, upped their aggression in the half's final 10 minutes and fired off three shots-on-goal within a matter of seconds. To the Coyotes' disappointment though, Rohman used her body as a shield and prevented all of their shots from penetrating the goal plane.

Throughout the second half, both teams continued to struggle with missed opportunities. Just more than six minutes into the second half, a shot by CSUSB freshman midfielder Makayla Varner flew over the crossbar while the Broncos had several breakaway chances from which they failed to produce points.

In the 74th minute, Corneliussen drilled the ball from 22 yards out directly at Rohman, who momentarily bobbled the ball but then gained full control to continue the shutout.

Overall, the Coyotes outshot the Broncos, 14-7. While both teams had five shots in the second half, the Coyotes had seven first-half shots. In comparison, the Broncos only had one shot each in the first half and overtime.

The Broncos will finish off the weekend at No. 25 UC San Diego (1-0, 0-0 CCAA) on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. The Coyotes will next host San Francisco State (0-0, 0-0 CCAA) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
